Easily Share your iTunes (DRM Free) iTunes music

Back in the day it was easy to hack iTunes Bonjour music sharing and allow any computer on the same network download and share iTunes songs freely. Then, Apple added in restrictions on how many connections iTunes would allow in a day, and changed the iTunes Bonjour protocol.

Sharepod skips the iTunes problem, and creates a new way for people to share music. This program enables you to copy music back and forth from your PC to your iPod. To achieve that the program bypasses iTunes all together and handles the iPod file management. In addition, Sharepod brings back the long missed network sharing feature, so anyone on the same network can share music (Like offices, and schools to name a few).

The price is right (FREE) and requires no installation since Sharepod is a simple .exe.

Legalese: When a Tape Recorder is not an Audio Recorder

Wha? Leave it to the record industry (BTW, why are they still called the RECORD industry?!) to be orchestrate some stunt to ruin fair use for an end user. Their latest target: XM Radio.

Record companies are alleging that XM is stealing music by letting consumers store songs on their
“XM + MP3″ players. Normally a lawsuit that involves taping songs off of a radio is not allowed to be filed due to the Audio Home Recording Act of 1992 with allows individuals to record music off the radio for private use. XM argued that since they are a “radio” provider – they should not be exempt from the recording law.

But the judge ruled that digital audio recorders are not synonymous to cassette tape recorders (for which the 1992 law was designed for) with regards to “fair use” laws indicating the XM may have violated the record companies copyrighted work.

Scientists recreate 1918 flu virus deteriorates monkey lungs

Scientists exhume a dead body from Alaska and use tissue to recreate the lethal 1918 flu virus. Does hearing this make anyone else a little more worried of the idea of “biological warfare”?

Scientists who recreated “Spanish flu” – the 1918 virus which killed up to 50m people – have witnessed its remarkable killing power first hand. The lungs of infected monkeys were destroyed in just days as their immune systems went into overdrive after a Canadian laboratory rebuilt the virus.

Makes this stomach flu of mine feel like a tropical paradise.

EVDOforums starts EVDOmaps

Evdomaps

The one-stop resource for all thing EVDO EVDOforums recently announced their latest offering to the wireless mobile internet user community – EVDOmaps. EVDO users can visit the site and report coverage statistics using their EVDO internet connection.

You’ve probably seen these postings before on EVDOforums.com, but you’ve never seen them the way you will on EVDOmaps.com! We’re using the latest in “Google Mashup” technology to “geocode” the records onto Google maps, allowing everyone to see where EVDO has been spotted, at what speeds, on what network carrier, and using what devices.

I’ve always believed in these user driven resources for “reliable coverage reporting” over the traditional corporate sponsored solutions which wireless carriers dump on their users.

Combine all your Credit Cards Securely into One

icache.jpg Enough with the credit cards! Between who has the best ‘reward system’ and certain establishments taking only one type of plastic I’m stuck carrying around eight cards (Two AMEX cards, a Mastercard, Visa, Debit, Business AMEX, Business Debit) and I think many other people do the same as well.

A product called “iCache” (Nope it is not an Apple product) hopes to put an end to al the madness. According to the iCache website this little guy enables you to register all your credit cards online, using biometric security as a security measure (note the fingerprint reader on the device). The iCache then digitally creates the card you need at a specific time. The ability to carry one device sounds wonderful, but I wonder about trusting one service with ALL my credit card numbers, and also the willingness of the credit card companies to allow a credit card to be duplicated, I’m sure there is a line in thier customer service agreement that forbids it. What are your thoughts?

Smart People, Dumb Piracy

400px-windows_xp_fckgw.jpg

People sure get desperate to get legitimate Windows XP Professional or Home licenses. First there was the leaked FCKGW code, which bypassed Windows Product activation and has since been banned by Microsoft.

With that key gone, and most key generators not working determined Windows key finders have had a ton of luck with the power of Google (and Belarc Security Advisor), or with a simple trip to a computer reseller. Of course, we strongly recommend that you BUY a retail copy of Windows and never pirate software – we are proving this story to simply point out that such methods of obtaining Windows XP keys exist.

Netflix streaming “Watch Now” is coming

Previously, we noted that Netflix Previews would usher in movie downloads for paying subscribers. The time for Netflix streaming content is finally upon us as Netflix plans to roll out support for streaming movies over the next few months. The New York Times reports on the latest with their Netflix to Deliver Movies to the PC [via]. The NYT’s title literally translates into Netflix’s current plans to offer streaming content to PC’s only (with plans for wider support over the next few months).

The service is, of course, free to paying subscribers. However, worth noting is the fact that subscribers will be allotted a specific number of viewing hours per month. These hour allotments are based upon your current subscription level i.e. $17.99 tier subscribers will receive 18 hours of viewing time.

The service, which will be introduced over six months, works only on recent versions of Windows and Internet Explorer. Over time, Mr. Hastings hopes to expand the catalog of titles and make the service available on other hardware and software combinations, including set-top boxes, television screens and portable devices.

“Recent versions of Windows and Internet Explorer”. Yuck, does that translate into IE7 users only? Blech. What are you thoughts on the service? Are you more curious to explore your video options now that you know Netflix offers mailing and streaming access to content?

NBC says you have to be smart to use Smartphone

A great example of how the iPhone screen performs in broad daylight. Unfortunately, the only line that stuck out was “the trouble is you’ve got to be smart to use a smartphone”. I sure hope I have the brains to operate a smartphone.
