Mac Mondays: Apple Front Row 1.0.1 (For EVERY Mac)

Front Row is only available on the new iMac but we have been using a modified version for a week now and this is reminiscent of iTunes version 1 but with Quartz Extreme effects built on top. Front Row is definitely a 1.0.1 release for many reasons. In terms of its usability, eye candy and the fact you can see the screen from across the room is amazing but many things about the new software need to be fixed if this is going to be included in other machines in the future or if it has a chance of competing with Microsoft’s already prevalent Media Center OS. (EDIT: You can always search for where you can acquire Front Row)

Really cool find for the Mac users out there!

You know how much UNEASYsilence loves Flickr, and Mac’s so this is a NATURAL fit!

Well after a few weeks of hard work and learning PHP I am ready to release a full working version of the FlickrSavr for Mac OS X. This version includes many improvments over the previous, and finally allows user interaction.

Although, I really love the Flying Taosters.

Mac Mondays: iTunes is Apple’s long-term investment

Some companies plan 5 years ahead for future products or other forms of income but I don’t believe Apple anticipated this kind of moneymaker when they released iTunes just 5 years ago. iTunes, originally a digital music jukebox for Mac OS 9 evolved into the application that interfaced with your iPod and shortly after became the number one digital music store in the world. Apple has made bad investments in the past like the Newton, Pippin and even the G5 because that chip only lasted them a few years before we made the Intel switch. iTunes has been around the longest and made Apple billions.

Mac Mondays: Why should you wait for Intel Macs?

Rumors are flying that Intel Macs may show their faces as early as January’s Macworld conference and others remain set on a mid 2006 timeframe but either way the time is not far away so should we wait or not? I have people ask me the question daily and I usually answer with a question saying, “Should you? Of course this pisses people off but let’s not fool ourselves that Apple’s holiday lineup is better than ever. Each Mac model has been refreshed in the last three months (the iBook being the oldest) and the hardware and software offerings from Apple are amazing and honestly the time frame for purchasing depends on your purchasing habits. Let me explain.

Mac Mondays: Apple’s Christmas Lineup

Apple’s holiday product line is as healthy as ever and rest assured, millions will hand over their credit cards for an iPod (or two), a Mac and a few iTunes gift cards as well. Many of you already know Apple’s product offerings going into this year’s holiday shopping season but I feel obliged to break it down because even I lose track of every product. We have iPod and it comes in 3 families with 2 products per family. Starting at 99 dollars through 399, each of these will fit in a stocking since all boxes are almost the same size now. The shuffle is great for kids and active individuals, the nano for the teen or part time music listener and the big daddy iPod for those with more than 5000 songs, or a craving for video.

Then there’s the iTunes Music Store with over 2 million videos and 2,000 music videos to keep you satisfied and you can purchase iTunes prepaid cards starting at 15 dollars up to 50 dollars a piece and personalized gift certificates sent via US Mail or Email run up to 200 dollars.

Mac Mondays: Aperture and Prosumer Photographers

Apple has announced its new tool for photographers to preview, import, organize, edit and output to your clients. Aperture is a postproduction application that “treats RAW images as JPEG in terms of how easy it is to edit and control the process. The application also takes advantage of EXIF and META data to help you organize these proofs. This is not a Photoshop competitor but a tool to compliment Photoshop. With PSD support and more, you can use Aperture to help you do small edits to your photos and move those into albums, edit them in Photoshop then move them back into Aperture to exports to online printing engines such as Ofoto and .Mac or print them as contact sheets or other customized prints.

Now that we know what Aperture does, how does it his affect today’s digital photographer and how they get work done? Apple boasted that this helps photographers get back to what they are good at doing, “taking photographs and removes the geekiness of moving these onto your computer, doing minor modifications then outputting for your clients to see. While I was working with a company we won’t name that makes computers and a popular music player, I met someone that is a wedding photographer and was convinced a 17 PowerBook was what she needed to help her get work done faster and deliver finished proofs of the wedding to her clients.
