Desktop based RSS reader NewsFire is now free. The program is regarded as being among the most aesthetically pleasing desktop RSS clients available. This comes after Newsgator announced it was giving away its RSS programs, FeedDemon and NetNewsWire for PC and Mac respectively for free in January.

The program will have no advertising, no feature restrictions and only one version available. How exactly revenue will be made with this model, if any, is yet to be seen. The program previously cost $18.99

Just because Dan’s away doesn’t mean the Apple news stops! Oh no, my friends. Apple updated their notebooks today, here are the details.

General

Macbook Pros

  • Macbook Pros now come with multi-touch gesture support, allowing you to pinch, rotate, swipe and interact differently with photos in iPhoto or Aperture, as well as browsing pages in Safari.
  • Illuminated Keyboard with ambient light sensor that auto-adjusts brightness
  • New Macbook Pro has the latest Intel Core 2 Duo technology going up to a 2.6GHz processor, 6MB of shared L2 cache.
  • Up to 4GB of 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM
  • Up to 300GB HD
  • NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics with up to 512MB video memory

Macbooks

  • Faster Processors available – 2.1GHz and 2.4GHz
  • 120GB or 160GB 5400rpm HDs
  • Black 2.4GHz model ships with 250GB 5400 rpm HD – this was previously available as an option.
  • Black Macbook ships with 2GB standard.
  • Up to 4GB memory on all Macbooks

So, just updates under the hood, no new laptops – but did we really expect anything right after the Macbook Air

Apple Shuffles iPod Shuffle Pricing

If you need an iPod, but have little coin Apple just hooked you up this morning. For $50 you can now get your paws on a 1GB iPod Shuffle, making it the cheapest iPod ever manufactured.

In the shuffle Apple also introduced a 2GB iPod Shuffle for $69. The 1GB model at the new price is available now and the 2GB Shuffle will be shipping sometime later this month.

MacBook Air in the House, Unboxing Photos

Look what the FedEx guy dropped off this morning. For your viewing pleasure the unboxing photos of the MacBook Air. Apple really paid attention to the boxing details of the Air, the box is REALLY well constructed, and very similar to the new iPod/iPhone boxes. Of note, it is amazing how thin the unit really is, we are booting it up now and benchmarking it later.

Is the MacBook Air the Next PowerMac Cube?

Seems that Apple may have another product that may suffer from “Cube Syndrome.” The MacBook Air is engineering marvel, but it is designed for a niche market demands a premium for its engineering while sacrificing a ton functionality.

Do you think this product will suffer the same fate as the Cube or has Apple found a viable ultra portable line? Do you think Apple is missing an opportunity to really push the Mac further by working on a lower priced machines instead of expensive portables?

Macworld 08: Secret New Features of iPhone 1.1.3

According to iPhone Atlas they are reporting that Apple has secretly increased the SMS storage limit from 1,000 texts to “about 75,000.” Also they have improved the keyboard to allow two letters to be depressed at the same time.

I don’t know about you but the 1,000 text message limit was, well, limiting.
