How-to: Play with Microsoft Powertoys

Did you know that Microsoft was kind enough to release little utilities to improve your Windows XP computing experience? Microsoft has conveniently coined these utilities Microsoft PowerToys. Doesn’t the idea of playing with toys on WinXP improve your day a little? There are a handful of utilities that you may find useful. Rather then going into detail for each , I will briefly cover the Tweak UI utility.

The first step is navigating to the Microsoft PowerToys homepage. In the right-hand column, locate and download the TweakUI application. Install into the default directory and run the utility. The Tweak UI interface is self-explantatory. The left column lists ‘tweakable’ attributes on WinXP while the right side provides explanations and options. For this how-to we will remove the arrows from desktop shortcuts:

Tweak UI screenshot

  • Click the plus sign next to ‘Explorer’ to display a drop down menu
  • Highlight ‘Shortcut’
  • The right-side of the window will present a few different options for shortcut overlay. To remove the shortcut arrow completely, select ‘none’ and click ‘apply’ at the bottom of the window.
  • Feel free to try the rest of the PowerToys. One notable utility worth downloading is the ClearType Tuner which makes it a little easier to read text on your screen. Feel free to leave comments if you’re looking for additional assistance.

    How-To: Download embedded videos

FOR THE LATEST INFORMATION PLEASE SUBSCRIBE TO OUR FEED HERE

Please note that the following will only work for Firefox users.

Have you ever found yourself watching an embedded video within a website? More importantly, have you ever found yourself wondering how to download that same video to keep locally for later viewing? Follow these easy steps and you’ll have the ability to download embedded movie files from your ‘favorite’ websites (poon).

    • First, install the GreaseMonkey Firefox extension from here.
This extension allows users to “customize” websites they visit on the
fly with special scripts. After installing, restart your Firefox
browser. After the restart, go up to Tools in the menu bar. You
should now have the following menu options: “Install user script”,
“Manage user scripts”, and “User script command”.
    • Next, we have to install the GreaseMonkey user scripts. You can find a growing list of scripts here. To download embedded movies, you’ll want to install the Unembed
script. Click on the Unembed link. Doing so will open a page with what
appears to be plain text (the actual script code). Go to Tools > Install user script. A “Install user script” window will pop up. Click OK to install.
    • Finally,
navigate to a website with an embedded video file. After installing the
GreaseMonkey Unembed script, you should now see a [download] link at
the bottom of the movie file allowing you to save the file locally on
      your own computer.

You have now seen first hand the power of GreaseMonkey user scripts. If you checked the script site, you most likely noticed the many choices to improve your browsing experience. Check back often, the options for user submitted scripts grows each day. A few of the scripts that I use are: [Google About.com remover], [Gmail: Adding persistent searches], and [Gmail: Mailto links to Gmail compose].

How-To: Hack for unlimited SMS Messaging for T-Mobile

By default, SMS messages are sent via GSM. At present T-Mobile charges $2.99 for 300 messages and $6.99 for 1000 messages. Obviously the price of a few drinks at Starbucks which isn’t a big hit on the wallet. However, overage charges for going over your limit do add up. The secret loophole can be accessed with a simple settings tweak on your handset. Settings vary from handset to handset so please review your manual or the manufacturers website for reference.

The key is changing your SMS sending options from the default GSM to GPRS and making sure that GPRS is always ONLINE.

Laymen terms: GSM is the technology for making phone calls from your handset. GPRS is the technology that GSM uses for packet-switching protocols allowing internet access. By sending SMS messages via GPRS, T-Mobile is not able to keep track of the messages sent and received on your handset meaning that messages will not be deducted from your alloted SMS bucket in essence allowing unlimited SMS sending and recieving. There is no guarantee that this will work. However, I have successfully tested this on both T-Mobile pre-paid and post paid accounts. Results will vary.

Not guaranteed to work for all users. Tested with T-Mobile US post/prepaid accts.

Please note that the following loophole is not guaranteed to work for all subscribers. Results will vary from subscriber to subscriber. If by chance you are one of the lucky users that successfully enables this on their phones, congratulations. For everyone else, sorry and please do not call T-Mobile US customer care whining that you can’t get this working.

Please understand that this loophole is only known to exist for T-Mobile US GSM subscribers. ATT/Cingular customers are also GSM subscribers. Unfortunately I have not had the opportunity to test this on those networks.

    Forum discussion

Revisited: A few of our readers who are Cingular customers have confirmed that this loophole does exist on their networks.

Update: Unfortunately widespread news of the once existent loophole caught the attention of T-Mobile. The loophole has since been closed and those seeking unlimited SMS utilizing GPRS will be disappointed. Don’t worry, keep checking UNEASYsilence for any updates on unlimited SMS messaging.
