If you are a New Yorker (or especially a tourist) you will be delighted to hear that all year long Yahoo will blanket Times Square with free Wifi!

The Wi-Fi from Yahoo promotion, which you can use from your laptop or mobile device, kicked off this morning at 8am EST and will continue throughout all of 2010.

We think the promotion is a smart play by the company, which hopes to see the 500,000 daily visitors to the Time Square area use their internet-enabled devices to not only access the web, but to use Yahoo as their starting point for browsing. The company has even created a specialized start page with news and content tailored to Times Square denizens.

    I’m going to need someone to define the blocks that encompass Times Square as defined by Yahoo and how many stories high this WiFi goes, because I wasn’t really seeing it Tues and Weds when parked in midtown.
