Like the idea of running Apple’s latest OS, but feel that $9.95 is extortion for something that is given away for free on the iPhone? Well, here is how you can download OS 3.0 the iPod Touch for free – FROM APPLE’S SERVERS!

Thanks to some clever internet sleuthing, publicly facing download links to the latest OS for both the first and second generation iPod touch were found which will allow you to download the 3.0 update for free.

Here is the catch, you have to be sure you are running iTunes 8.2, once you have done that download the correct OS for your iPod Touch.

First Generation Touches CLICK HERE

Second Generation Touches CLICK HERE

If you are downloading this file on a Mac using Safari, be sure you UNCHECK “Open Safe Files After Downloading” box in Safari’s preferences. Once the file is downloaded, rename the file to remove the .zip extension so it ends in .ipsw.

Once you connect your iPod Touch to your computer in iTunes you will need to install the update. On PC’s press and hold the Shift key and click update and navigate to the downloaded file and the free upgrade to 3.0 will begin. On Mac’s hold down the Option key and click update and navigate to the downloaded file and the free upgrade to 3.0 will begin.

Convenience win. I bought my son’s Touch AFTER the 3.0 release and it still came with the older firmware on it. Very annoying, and I wasn’t going to have the time to deal with Apple about it for several weeks. Now I don’t have to. Thank you!

    Nice. Thanks.

Come on, who doesn’t know about this? It’s just like when apple charged for the download the little update to so that wireless G to “unlock” wireless N capability. on C2D macs.

Extortion? Really? Apple is threatening you to fork over your money?

$10 is a perfectly reasonable price for a full OS upgrade, especially one with this many new features. iPhone owners get it “free” because they’re paying $70+ a month for service (a portion of which is shared with Apple).

    Congratulations on ripping off Apple.
