RSS Player: Podcaster Reborn and ACCEPTED Into The App Store – UPDATED

Remember all the drama over Apple’s rejection of Podcaster? Instead of getting frustrated Alex, the developer of Podcaster, decided if he couldn’t beat the system (by distributing his application via AdHoc distribution) he would join it.
Back to the drawing board Alex has created RSS Player, which IS essentially Podcaster – minus the directory.
Specifically designed to play audio files attached to rss feeds.
Start by entering an rss feed url or opml url into the import screen, then the program crawls the feed and displays the items it finds in an easy to read table. If the program finds an audio file attached to the feed, it will automatically download the most current one. This makes it easy for iPod Touch owners to listen when they are offline.
This is a really great app with high standard. We will keep improving it and adding features in future releases. If you purchase this app, we are sure you will love it.
There are no download restrictions on podcast sizes over 3G (such as Apple’s 10MB limit via Mobile iTunes) and for $1.99 I think its a great bargain for Podcast enthusiasts.

The duplication of functionality argument was never going to last long – at least not if the iPhone got any significant kind of traction. It would be declared outright illegal if challenged in court. And that’s probably the reason it’s gone.
The name change was a requirement, I am pretty sure Apple legal owns Podcast, so Podcaster isn’t going to work. Apple doesn’t even allow websites to have the word iPod in them.

The Walmart analogy is weak but yes you could sue if Walmart was the only store in America and prevented you from selling things that compete with a Walmart brand.

Downloaded a file via over ATT’s service, download completed. Podcast is "stored" on the phone supposedly, you go to play the file you just downloaded, it tries to stream it, and if you’re in airplane mode it says "audio paused while you’re offline"… well then what the hell was the point of downloading it?!

Apple doesn’t own the term Podcast. They tried to bully their way with cease and desist letters to companies using the term but when there was an uproar they stopped. The term Podcast isn’t trademarkable (Is that a word?). It’s been tried already but it got rejected.

If it’s anything like Podcaster it will crash, be buggy as hell, and be slow.
The built in podcasting downloads on the iPhone leaves a lot to be desired too. It’s just not done right. Apple need to redesign the whole concept and have it work the same way as when you purchase music, syncing back to your PC , auto refresh new podcasts without having to check each one individually.
It also needs to play in the iPod app not as a Quicktime file, so you can do other things at the same time. And get rid of that god awful 10MB limit over 3G…. only a minority of iPhone plans are on AT&T worldwide, and the rest of us actually pay for our usage (no all you can eat plans here)

What! If you look, most iPhone apps, and then some, are already in Winmo. In fact, most of the apps began as a Winmo only apps.
One thing Apple apps store does to iPhone user is nickel and dime you guys to death on useless apps. If you guys where to add up all the apps you guys bought that are not in your iPhone anymore, it would probably total up to a hefty amount.
By the way, RRS came with my HTC for free.

It would be nice if Apple’s policy loosens up a bit, but I don’t think that everything that’s happened actually DID!
For example, the ‘new browsers’ referenced in the article are NOT new browsers. They are add ons using the built in Mobile Safari in different modes. This is actually mentioned IN the product descriptions for "Edge Browser" and "Shaking Web", for example.

Remember that Apple originally approved Podcaster as well. It was only later that they removed it citing violations… then released the same features in their own updated apps.
So as nice as this may be, I wouldn’t place any bets on this app being around six months from now either.

That’s why it’s important that you purchase the program now. I bought it last night and after some initial connection problems were fixed, the app works great. It’s a bit cumbersome having to manually input the RSS feeds, but hopefully he’ll be able to add those in gradually. He stated in an email to BOL that he will gradually add some of those stripped features back in.

Myles, you’re confused about the antitrust aspect. It isn’t a matter of not having other smartphones to choose from. Think of it in the same terms that Microsoft has continuously been in trouble over. The inclusion of numerous technologies and basically muscling out any competing technology is where the antitrust problems would stem from. By not allowing competing applications to be sold because Apple wants to ensure use of their own similar functionality is bound to result in some kind of lawsuit.

MS was fined, in a specific instance, for "bundling" software (Windows Media Player, for example) wherein the court decided that by including certain apps/features MS was effectively limiting competition (whether the argument is valid will be a debate for the ages..). MS has an app which provides functionality similar to applications openly available from any number of vendors and they were dinged by the EU as being anti-competitive. Apple however, isn’t even letting the competing apps into the marketplace! They?re effectively saying, ?No, you can?t distribute your app because it competes with, a) something we already have, or b) something which we *plan* on having in the future. Clear cut reasons for exclusion aren?t offered and no visibility is provided into Apple?s enhancement roadmap.
Imagine if MS came out tomorrow and said that ALL windows apps MUST be purchased through the MS Store and RealPlayer, Firefox, OpenOffice, etc. won?t be available to consumers because they compete with our existing ? or future – products! In addition, we may (will?) arbitrarily pull the app if we decide it applies to a space in which we plan to operate – someday. Oh, and by the way, we get 40%.

Und RSS Player ist laut dem Verdikt von Ars Technica ziemlich unnütz in der aktuellen Version.
Wahrscheinlich wird die Applikation nur aus Mitleid gekauft… ;-)
