You don't think that a catastrophic Mac virus would make the news?

Bottom line, the knowledge to do such a thing isn't as freely available as it is for the "other" platform and the security holes are not as abundant. We're truly taking about Apples and Oranges here. Industrial strength software, testing and security vs. $50,000 in a pinch and using the consumer as a beta tester for years.

Bill Gates made a brilliant business decision with mediocre software, Steve Jobs leads the best people in the world to make the best products possible. It just took the latter business model a lot longer to flourish.

The only computer that can possibly be immune to a virus is the one that has no software, that has never been turned on. Macs may not be able to contract Windows viruses, but that doesn't necessarily stop someone from writing a virus targeting Macs. In my opinion, the main reason that Macs do not have many viruses written to attack them is because Windows is the 'big one'. Take down windows, and your virus will be put on the news if it becomes widespread enough.

@Jerry

I think the latest numbers are 8% of the browser market, which may or may not include iPhones. I think 8% would be considered "worth it".

Nothing’s “immune”. Just a matter of a worthy target?

Just because Macs are "immune" doesn't mean that you can't give a Windows machine a virus. Now whether you think its worth it (buying AV software) just to not infect your friends is up to you.
