Android, At First Blush… And Dan Eats Some Crow
Well, its time for me to eat my hat. Now, I’m not posting a full review yet – BUT – I must say my gut reaction to Android was wrong. Yes, the OS is far from a finished look and feel. Yes, The G1 may not be the best piece of hardware to showcase the OS (Having to constantly switch the device on its side and flip out the keyboard to type IS annoying) BUT the Android OS has promise.

At first blush I thought the G1 was just a Sidekick on steroids (Although I can see may converters) but Android IS a viable OS. Having the ability to code any application and distribute it WITHOUT RESTRICTIONS is appealing. No, Android will not beat RIM or Apple but Palm should be VERY worried. Windows Mobile isn’t safe either. Mark my words, Apple and RIM will battle for number one. Android will place a strong second. Windows Mobile third and I think Palm will fade away or just distribute the WinMo OS.
I must say, I thought I would hate Android… I don’t… Stay tuned! Thoughts?

The OS is brilliant in the fact that if you don’t like something you can change it completely. If only that was the case with the handset itself!
I really think if the handset was slimmer and more sleeker I would buy it over the iphone.
Hopefully this thing makes a big enough impact for others to take note and create some far more apealing handsets.
This isn’t even HTC’s best handset by a glance at their website!
Don’t taunt me with that macbook (or pro). Man, I want one of those so bad!
I have no idea of what you speak :P
Spelling mistake on 1st line.
@Ross: tome is a word. It is a heavy book.
I’m really exited about this OS
Dan I think you’re wrong on this one … Android is going to be as much of a front runner as iPhone and RIM. I am willing to bet in the next 2 years you’re going to see more Android handsets… what’s really cool is 2 people with the same phone can have completely different flavors…. there is gonna be a day where your friend will hand you his phone that’s the same model as yours and you’ll have to take a second to get used to his because he’s installed OS extensions and replaced core components of the OS… maybe a different dialer, or a different desktop… you’re heavily under estimating it… hope you’re putting another crow pie in the oven.
Android > All …. just you wait.
Really the Macbook is the money shot of this article. Sure I have one already, but I love seeing it.
@Ross: What spelling mistake? Android requires that Dan eat its hat. That seems the least he could do, a mac-hugger like him (and me).
Nothing to do with Android but look forward to try it out.
Dan have you seen that Codeweaver are giving their software away free today (until 1159 CST). They current have some problems with the server and have temporarily disabled the CodeWeavers main website but you can still get the serial number under the “The CodeWeavers Lame Duck Presidential Challenge”
http://www.codeweavers.com
its a good program for the mac or linux to run windows applications without windows.

After trying Android, I have to say that I’m not nearly as impressed as you seem to be. It totally feels like a beta quality device and OS.
There is no doubt that Android WILL become a dominant force in the industry, but it certainly isn’t going to happen here. I have a feeling that quite a few of the non-geeks who buy this phone expecting it to be the t-mobile equivalent of the iPhone are going to end up being extremely upset with it.
I’m looking forward to seeing a device more like the HTC Touch Diamond running Android with a totally revamped user-interface that is actually consistent throughout.
The G1, at least in it’s current state, doesn’t do much but frustrate me.
