Wow…you give things away and the herd comes back to the site….
Giveaways are great, I do them fairly regularly myself. However, HP’s is a little over the top in how they run these promotions. All the multiple posts plus cross linking for Google juice and perhaps Techmeme gaming (with their Dragon contest) is a little much though. Engaging the blogosphere is different than purchasing it. Guess that’s what we should expect from a ‘viral’ marketing firm, rather than hearing from the PR or product folks – who’d I’d rather talk to. I’m surprised no one called them on it the first time around – when about a dozen of the blogs I follow wouldn’t shut up at the Dragon.

@ Dave Zatz – Nick from Buzz Corps here, managing this promotion as well as the 31 Days you’ve mentioned. I disagree with you that these promotions are purchasing the blogosphere; rather, we’re providing the opportunity for blogs that really matter to get hands-on use of HP products and simultaneously raise awareness of those products in an innovative way. We’re not asking any blogger to do anything differently than they would otherwise, in particular, to modify their editorial approach.
And in fact, we work directly with the Product and Marketing Managers at HP responsible for designing, developing and marketing the products, so they know them inside and out. Each blogger participating in this promotion can have direct access to those people at HP, and they will listen intently to what the bloggers have to say.
I suspect you still may not agree with this position, but I would like to know more about where you’re coming from – let me drop you an email privately.

In all fairness I have no requirement to post anything promoting the product at all. My only requirement is not to say anything bad about HP. If I felt that HP needed to be spanked I would have gladly stepped away from the program but I really have no relationship with the company and the ability to gave away hardware with almost no strings attached is a great opportunity!
