End the speculation. If you open up iTunes and plug in your iPhone be sure to hit that update button. Firmware 2.1 has been put out on the tubes and waiting to be loaded on your phone.

Now this is not one of those “Bug Fix” updates. According to Apple’s site 2.1 promises:

* Decrease in call set-up failures and dropped calls
* Significantly better battery life for most users
* Dramatically reduced time to backup to iTunes
* Improved email reliability, notably fetching email from POP and Exchange accounts
* Faster installation of 3rd party applications
* Fixed bugs causing hangs and crashes for users with lots of third party applications
* Improved performance in text messaging
* Faster loading and searching of contacts
* Improved accuracy of the 3G signal strength display
* Repeat alert up to two additional times for incoming text messages
* Option to wipe data after ten failed passcode attempts
* Genius playlist creation

Hmmm, Interestingly the list of updates doesn’t include Steve Jobs bold proclamation that “Apps won’t” crash.

For those who want a direct link you can find the 3G software here and the 2G software here.

Update: Hey, they changed the 3G icon

    Actually, the bullet point

“* Fixed bugs causing hangs and crashes for users with lots of third party applications”

was what Steve was referring when he said that “apps won’t crash that often if you have a lot of apps”.

Still can’t reliably connect to Comcast POP mail via 3G after 2.1 update though it works fine on Edge – so I still have to leave the phone on Edge most of the time.
