It’s A Down Day on The Internet

Posted in Random by Dan at 1:32 pm

Beware of bad luck today. Seems that Twitter is down (no surprise) as well as Amazon.com (HUGE surprise).

Service at Amazon.com Inc.’s Web site was unavailable on Friday. Amazon’s homepage returned the message “Http/1.1 Service Unavailable” against a blank white screen. No reason for the service interruption was listed, and company representatives were not available for immediate comment. Shares of Amazon were down 2.7% to $82.25 in early afternoon trading.

People I have talked to familiar with the situation have told me that there is a major routing issue with one of Amazon’s ISP’s and NOC engineers are working frantically to resolve the issue.

As far as Twitter going down - its just another normal day.

  1. I really don’t care too much about Amazon; although, I do realize that’s quite a big deal - one, if not the, largest online shopping center going down - it’d be like all the Walmarts closing (if even for a few minutes). However, it’s very upsetting to me that twitter goes down as often as it does.

What’s more upsetting is that it’s caused from how they scaled their web app; being a Ruby on Rails developer, it’s very scary to see what problem *I* could potentially encounter if I ever need to make a large, millions-of-hits-a-day web app (which I haven’t… yet).

Also, I really enjoy using twitter. STAY ALIVE TWITTER!
