US Government Considering Legislation to Reduce Cellphone Cancellation Fees

This site is not responsible for any misunderstanding.Tired of paying those $170+ cellphone cancellation fees? Apparently some people in the US government are fed up with it too. But it seems the legislation isn’t off to the best start.
A proposal for the government to help cell phone customers avoid expensive fees when they cancel contracts with wireless companies may go down in flames after consumer advocates protested Wednesday it isn’t generous enough.
Cell phone companies routinely charge customers $175 or more for quitting their service early. Under a proposal to the Federal Communications Commission, the wireless industry would give consumers the opportunity to cancel service without any penalty for up to 30 days after they sign a cell phone contract or until 10 days after they receive their first bill, among other provisions.
In exchange for the government’s approval, the agreement would let cell phone companies off the hook in state courts where they are being sued for billions of dollars by angry customers. If approved by the FCC, the proposal also would take away the authority of states to regulate the charges, known as early termination fees.
The legislation still only applies to the first months service and I do think reaches far enough to really provide any impact on any individual.
I personally think cellphone companies should not subsidize phones (or allow you to waive a subsidy) in exchange for no contracts. This will force cellphone companies to work harder to earn your business.
You’ve got a good idea there, on the other hand, manufacturers charge ridiculous amounts of money for fairly crappy phones – the base price for T-Mobile’s Samsung Beat is actually MORE than the RAZR and other comparable Motorola models…
That said, I’d go ahead and pay for a phone (that I probably like more) in exchange for no contracts. I’m totally sick of them. :| Besides, I’ve already paid full price for a phone several times since people keep stealing mine. Might as well get something out of it.
