Google Docs Now Offline

Google Docs is finally allowing users to edit documents offline using Google Gears. Initially documents alone will be editable and spreadsheets will be readable with presentation documents to get similar functionality down the road. Online word editors like Google Docs, while useful, still have the stumbling block of people not being able to get their work done without an internet connection.

Interestingly enough, competitor in this space Zoho has had offline functionality with its word-processing application for a while now, Zoho Writer. Is this welcome news to anyone?

It’s probably un-welcome news to Microsoft.

  2. I feel like they might be too late with this. Google Docs made it’s debut and I feel like people gave it a solid try, but dismissed it for being like the rest of Google’s services… in the “cloud” apps. And most people can’t have their documents in the cloud all the time. Their feeds, their email, etc. are all commonly considered “internet” activities. But editing documents and spreadsheets, for most business workers, needs to be done any time/anywhere.

I wonder… has too much time has gone bye? Will people to give Google Docs another chance as their main workplace document/spreadsheet application?

Jeremy – What are you talking about? People like me like Google Docs and like having everything integrated with my Gmail etc. Then again, I like Zoho too, and Office 2007…it’s kind of a symptom of trying out so many services and programs to write about them. But…you’re making it sound like there has been this mass exodus away from Google Docs.

Hmm I do think its too late for Google, Google Docs is nothing like Gmail I find it clunky, hard to use and confusing. I use Office 2007 and its so easy to with the new interface and everything produced looks very professional.

Google Docs in my eyes is good for nothing more than a simple note or a letter, if your looking to do anything more than that your pushing the boat out a bit too much.

I’m no expert Word Processor nor do I use word to its full capacity but even the basics Google Docs falls at. I cant even think of a school child being able to do a report in it without some trouble.

I like zoho a lot better than g-docs, but no one I know uses zoho, and tons of people use gmail and other google services. So I really hope google gets on the ball and updates their stuff. They might be getting too big for them to efficiently update/run all their apps.
