Cruel and Controversial Meals

Trifter has an interesting article on cruel and controversial delicacies around the world. While it’s easy to be up in arms at the way some meals are prepared we have to remember that what we do may be considered strange, unusual or cruel to others. In eating meat as I do, I acknowledge that animals must die for me to enjoy what I eat. Some would rather not know what goes into preparing meals they eat, which is fine, but who is to say any of these meals are any more or less cruel than the way chicken or beef is prepared for us? Just some food for thought since I anticipate people thinking to immediately say how bad some of these meals are. With that said, I do not see the need make animals suffer unnecessarily as with the first dish in the story. Then again, who are we to judge? Still very intriguing.

    the biggest issue I have is the Korean’s/Chinese … it’s rather common belief that the more pain and suffering an animal goes through makes it taste better… now that is just fucked up no matter what you’re eating.

    I’m not a vegetarian and I love a good steak, but the idea of torturing your food before eating it is a bit much for me.

    Chad, please cite a source for your statement: “it’s rather common belief that the more pain and suffering an animal goes through makes it taste better.” Who says this? How common exactly is this sentiment?

    I am a Chinese-American food writer and I have never heard of this as a common culinary axiom in Korea or China. I’ll give you that there are people who subscribe to this way of thinking, but I can assure you they are a very small minority.

    Xenophobic comments like this one is a sure way to spread ignorance and hate - the germination of which I can already see sprouting here.
