Aviary Suit Flocking Soon
Update: The first 25 people signing up referred from this site will get invites, so have at it! Keep an eye out for more invites in the future.
Web applications have become increasingly more powerful as of late. No longer are they proof of concept, but full on competitors to desktop programs. (I was at one point using meebo for my IM needs, but switched to Pidgin, then Digsby)
While Photoshop is the be all and end all of image manipulation programs there are a few setbacks. For one thing, it’s way expensive, which can be a detorrent, erm deterrent to people who just want to do minor image editing. There are some alternatives out there, such as the free GIMP project but when it comes to collaboration, or having your tools on the go, Aviary wants to be what you think of – and I am willing to bet they’ll do just that.
Aviary is a set of online tools for “people who create” meaning they have a web-based version of programs for image manipulation, font editing, 3-D modeling, vector editing and more, including audio tools.
I had the chance to play around with just one of their programs, but I was instantly impressed and can’t wait to try out the rest of their offerings.
Image Editing With Phoenix
I really, really can’t do much more with images than I do to post on this blog: take screenshots and crop. Phoenix allows you to do this and a whole lot more because it’s a full-on layer-based image manipulation program. What does that mean? If you can do it in Photoshop you can probably do it in the Aviary suite of programs, which includes Phoenix. While I can go on telling you over and over about it, let video do the talking. Keep in mind it’s a web-based program, which I didn’t realize initially.
So thanks to the magic of Youtube and Fergie you’re getting an idea of what this is all about.
While online image editing isn’t anything new with options such as Splashup, Piknic, FotoFlexer and Snipshot all available, the way in which all the different programs in Aviary can work together is notable.
Did I mention there’s a bit of a social networking aspect here as well?
Attempting to describe it as best I can, when you make your masterpiece using Aviary you can share your creations with the community, allowing them to comment, as well as try their hand at the image with your source files.
There is quite a bit more to touch on, like eventually being able to use the products offline thanks to Adobe AIR, as well as the other tools in Aviary. I was pleasantly surprised with what I came across, not expecting anything nearly as cool as I experienced. Still in closed beta, you’ll have to sign up for an invitation to one of their programs and of course we’ll try our best to give away an invite if anyone might be interested, but we doubt ;)
Interesting tidbit, this is brought to you by the people behind Worth1000. Who would have thought they were actually a company making such kick-ass products?

This is defintely a very cool alternative to CS2/3. And as a student, it would def. come in handy. May I please have one of those invites you think that people may not be interested in? I’m definitely interested. I do a lot of work for non profits and this tool would come in handy when I teach kids how to make art on the fly…
you can send me an invite in email i included with this message.
thanks a lot!!
Sweet, this would definetly come in usefull.
If you could send me an invite I would be extremely gratefull.
keep up the good work
I’d love to try this out in my technology lab. We use a combination of Artrage and Paint.NET (both great programs), but I’m always on the lookout for new tools.
Looks sweet.
First, damn I love uneasysilence!
This sort of story is why I read you guys every day.

You can send it to my email that is attached to this message.

Id like to try it out before forking out for an adobe suite :) any invites???
If you signed up and didn’t get an invite, keep an eye out, we should be giving away some soon.
http://picnik.com is also a pretty good one, not nearly as powerful from what I see… but integrates into facebook and such seemlessly… great for the less advanced user (even have my mom using it)
Cool, I’m looking forward to trying out the other programs. I signed up last night and got the invite today, so that was refreshingly fast :)
Thank to uneasysilence :p
Stivil – Really appreciate the kind words.
So how do we get an invite? Just put our email on their site or what? I must’a not understood something…
First 25 to register from clicking on the link to their site from this blog. They track the referral, but that might be over so we’ll give out some invites manually soon.
