Digsby - Manage Your Online Life

Let me first say that this program is highly recommended - I’m not just writing about it because I’m trying to reach a quota (we get 5 cents per blog post) but because it’s something I’m actually using and really, really like.

Digsby is an all-encompassing program (think pidgin, Trillian, Adium) on steroids as it handles not just IM accounts, but email and social networks as well. While Trillian, and even Adium may have some but not all these features, the execution of Digsby sets it apart from the competition. Aesthetically pleasing, Digsby is excellent for people who want to be notified of every email you get in your multiple email accounts, stay on top of your multiple IM accounts and social networks.

A very notable feature of the program is the way it tastefully handles notifications, with a pop-up on the left of your screen (location can be changed to any corner) which, for instant messages allows you to reply from within the pop up. Ignore the pop up and it goes away. It’s very effective for when you want to reply to people’s messages and not lose track of what you are doing.

This is what would happen if Meebo did a desktop application. I’m a big fan and I think you will be too.

Try It.

For Facebook users, there is also a widget you can add to your profile allowing people to talk to you through Digsby which works well, similar to Meebo’s “Meebo me” widget.

Mac and Linux support should be coming along soon, keep up to date on that here.

Want to try it out on your own? Of course you do! Download the client and install. When prompted, you will need to make an account and put in an invite code. Use the code uneasysilence

I was told the program will remain free, but there may be a paid version down the road.

Chats are not encrypted but it will be coming soon.

The program is in open beta, so if you have stuff you want done to improve it you can more than do so now.

Let us know what you think of the program.

  1. Need to get this post updated, you can now use the code ‘uneasysilence’ to use the program.

  2. I’ve been using this program now for about 10 minutes and I must say, it *is* incredibly helpful to have all of this information in one place. Do you mind if I share this news with the unlock code on my weblog?

  3. Link to us and share all you want.

Frankly, this looks just like a port of Adium to Windows, but with some extra features. Not to mention, those themes look like they’re from Adium as well.

Looks promising, will definitely give it a shot.

  5. For windows users such as myself that never touched Adium it doesn’t matter :D

it’s nice and all and I’m enjoying it… but I don’t like my IMs coming from the bottom of the screen, which I can’t find how to change, and some of the skins are lagging behind when an IM goes or (I’m guessing) comes…… I do like the integration and incorporating it into multiple facebook accounts is a little odd when you try to install the app…… other then that I’m enjoying it…. except that I can’t have myself on my MSN buddy list……you know to make sure my name and icon look correct….. but I really do like the buddy icon screen capture box, it’s fun to just run around your desktop and files and just play with it 8Þ……..

This is sooo cool! Very seamless intros between email/social media sites (Facebook), this is going to be a very fun one indeed…..

So far an IM client that is useful and not ugly and or bloated with other crap I could care less for. It’s pretty and does the job.

  9. Enzer - Go to tools>Preferences>notifications and make the pop-up be in any corner of the screen.

  10. Carlos

Does anybody know if they have plans to go portable or if there is any way to make it portable. I can see that it would have great potential for those of us that travel quite a bit with just a flash drive.

Evan- it’s not the pop ups themselves that are the problem, it’s the conversations that I’m having in the chat box that’s the problem… I’ve already moved the notifications 8Þ…… also….. can’t wait for this to come out for linux………..

  12. Enzer - Contact them. It’s an open beta and they will be looking forward to hearing your issues.

Carlos - I know John Haller does portable stuff on his own, check him out and ask him http://portableapps.com/ or just contact them and ask!

  13. Carlos

Evan - You’re probably right. I should just nag them a bit.

  14. Yeah, if there’s enough demand for something I am sure they’ll look into it. Of course it’s still an open beta, so I assume they would want to do a proper version before making it portable.

  15. I like the app. I hate that Digby hijacked my homepage in Firefox, but otherwise I’m feeling good about it.

    Just un-installed Pigin.

Meh, a little buggy for my wonked up Gtalk (using Adium and the Gtalk client over my two comps kind of made my contacts list… strange…), and I don’t use AIM enough to justify messing around with it to get it to work. Looks pretty nice though, but not enough for me to abandon desktop Gtalk app.
