MacBook Air in the House, Unboxing Photos
Posted in Apple by Dan at 10:51 am
Look what the FedEx guy dropped off this morning. For your viewing pleasure the unboxing photos of the MacBook Air. Apple really paid attention to the boxing details of the Air, the box is REALLY well constructed, and very similar to the new iPod/iPhone boxes. Of note, it is amazing how thin the unit really is, we are booting it up now and benchmarking it later.

Okay, I’m jealous.
Broke, but jealous. I’m hoping for an iPhone-style price drop on the solid state drive before I get another paycheck, what are my odds?

@Roger most likely at some paycheck point. Like 26!

I love the Mac porn! The comparison with the jewel case is amazing. Does it feel delicate or overly light or fragile or the sort?
Btw, you have a funny power plug! :P

I’m assuming you paid for this yourself, and it’s not a review machine?

The machine itself is actually pretty, but I wonder how the performance on it is.

Sorry for this question, but can you write the OS-Version? Is it 10.5.1 with update, oder 10.5.2?

Totally coveting your Macbook Air. Although I am saying that quietly (I don’t want my Macbook Pro to hear me say that!). :)

Wow - it’s actually thinner than I expected it to be. Seeing the side-by-side with the iPhone is really dramatic, thanks for sharing!

Hi Dan..
I would like to ask you to test how much time it takes for the MacBook Air to do a full recharge of the battery, because in some tests and reviews they said that it could take up to 8:30 hours.. :/
There is a lot of discussion about that in Apple discussions forums:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1363063&tstart=0
The Macworld article reviewing the MacBook Air said this:
http://www.macworld.com/article/131864/2008/01/macbookair.html
“My attempts to recharge the Air’s battery took a surprisingly long time. Apple says that the behavior I witnessed doesn’t really fit with any of its testing; we’re working with Apple to get to the bottom of the issue and Macworld Lab will do further battery testing (inluding both discharge and recharge time) soon to help clarify the issue.”
And Gizmodo review said this:
http://gizmodo.com/348753/macbook-air-review
“UPDATE: A second day of battery testing shows the Air lasting 4:30 by lowering LED brightness from full to midpoint. An alarming find is that the 45watt Magsafe adapter (an ipod adapter sized brick) will charge the Air from empty to full in 8:30 with the Air in sleep mode. We’ve confirmed this twice. Will test with a Macbook Pro adapter to see if that changes anything. (I doubt it, but we’ll see.) UPDATE: Phew. Retests show the Macbook Air charges to full battery in about 3 hours with either charger.”
Tell us how much it takes to your MacBook Air to do a full recharge of the battery.
Also, ¿it’s HD or SSD version?

SSDs have been around for a while, and yes, that’s what they cost, it’s not an inflated Apple price, so don’t get your hopes up on a price drop on SSD anytime soon, sorry. ;)

Why would anybody be jealous? No ethernet, no cd drive, extremely over priced and horrible specs. This is the worst apple product since apple tv

You get a 64bit Intel Core 2 Duo running at 1.6GHz, so processing power won’t be bad. The 4200 rpm is where the biggest bottleneck lies. This machine was built for solid state. For Apple it’s a great way to make a product out of a “concept”.
I can see other laptops following this kind of trend.
The packaging is ridiculously well done.

Its doesn’t feel delicate at all. I will be posting a review after a few days usage to say how it really functions in a real world scenario.
Besides the speaker, anybody want me to test anything else?

How do you load OSX on a Macbook Air without an optical drive? I suspect it comes preloaded with Leopard, but the owner would have to take it to an Apple store to reload OSX in the event of a crash. What about 10.6 (Ocelot?), how will the user load the big updates? Maybe Apple will actually let us purchase downloads of big OS updates in the future.

I was wondering if you could take a better picture comparing iPhone thickness to the MacBook Air, or CD Jewel Cases stacked etc,. or for a more accurate, could you stack actual CDs/DVDs?
Thanks!

Sweet, so awsomely sweet. I believe them,in that it was built for the 64SSD instead of the single platter, there, will be, where we will see it at it’s speediest.
I await some reviews of the latter and maybe a comparo of the two.

I don’t quite get the hatred that a lot of people have towards the Air. While I would like a bigger HDD, pretty much nothing else bothers me.
I’m a professional engineer, working in a research lab, so I’m assuming that I work my computers as hard as anyone else. That said, everything is on the netowork. I haven’t used my DVD drive in 6 months. I know this, because it broke 6 months ago and haven’t felt the need to fix it. I plug my iPhone in to sync and very occasionally find someone who wants to give me data on a USB drive, but the Air can handle these situations with no problem. I’ve stopped carrying my extra batteries in my laptop bag because they just weigh me down and I very rarely needed extra juice.
I’m not saying that the Air is for everyone. But really, some people don’t need 8 USB devices plugged into their computer all the time and aren’t burning DVDs on the road while carrying 15 lbs in batteries because it’s been a month since they’ve seen an internet cafe with a spare power outlet. (Hint: a 3 outlet splitter costs and weighs a lot less than an extra battery.)
Apple has created the sports car of notebooks; a single purpose machine that is very good at doing what it does and that compromises in other aspects. But I think that the Air is for the cutting edge user, not the person still burning CDs.

@ Brad
The lack of Optical drive is supposed to be overcome by either using a USB2 drive you can buy, or use a new network application, one for PC’s, and one for Mac’s, that shares their optical drive, using either ethernet or Wifi at 802.11n Spec. Dan, I’m curious to see how the CD via network works. fast enough to run a DVD off of? I realize that 300 mbps isn’t consistent, just max available. Let us know. Maybe try installing Windows for whatever variant of Dual booting you use.
Jan 31st, 2008
Leop
@Brad: To install new software, you have two options:
1) Get the Optical Drive
2) Netboot via Remote Disc to your other Mac.

The voice of reason. It seems that people are hopping on the “Put Apple down” bandwagon in almost the same way that they used to hop on the “Everything Microsoft is rubbish” bandwagon. It’s horses for courses - the sports car analogy is great.
I personally think the Air is a great invention and if I could justify it even slightly I would buy one!

I can’t wait until the hardware and overheating issues start to come out based on it’s design. Since most Mac fans prefer style over function this purchase makes sense. Macs are great for video and photo production but for the average user it seems to be just an expensive status symbol. This will be the most stolen laptop of 2008 by suburban Meth addict teens and collage aged kids. “Airbook - coming soon to a pawn shop near you!”

Toddler survivability: about 36 seconds.
I have a two and a six year old kid, so I think about stuff like this, especially since my laptop’s primary function is playing DVDs for the kids on road trips.
Yes, it looks sexy. It’s also almost impossible to service, unexpandable, and sorely lacking in ports which, yes I use the ports on my laptop.
I’ll keep my eight year old Powerbook G3, so when it finally meets and untimely death at the hands of a three year old, I’m out $150 and not $1800. And that’s if the G3 gets smoked bad enough that I can’t easily fix it with parts from eBay. For a while there, Apple understood that when you spent three grand on a piece of hardware, you expected it to be completely and easily serviceable and expandable. Then Steve Jobs came back..

The “Air” came out long after the Asus EEE PC:
http://eeepc.asus.com/global/product.htm
I would have thought Apple would be more up on that arena. And the price of the EEE is only $400… ???
BTW: When the EEE came out, 10,000 units were sold in two weeks. I’d be interested to know how many Airs sell in it’s first two weeks…
