AT&T Confirms 3G iPhone “Next Year”

This site is not responsible for any misunderstanding. The iPhones Achilles heal, the SLOW EDGE modem, will be getting an upgrade come 2008. Although the upgrade was expected the timing was a little earlier then I predicted.
Apple Inc. will introduce a version of the iPhone next year that can download from the Internet at a faster rate, AT&T Inc. Chief Executive Officer Randall Stephenson said.
The device will operate on third-generation wireless networks, Stephenson said today at a meeting of the Churchill Club in Santa Clara, California. San Antonio-based AT&T is the exclusive carrier for the iPhone in the U.S.
“You’ll have it next year,” Stephenson said in response to a question about when the 3G iPhone would debut. He said he didn’t know how much more the new version will cost than the existing model, which sells for $399. Apple Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs “will dictate what the price of the phone is,” he said.
I would assume Apple will charge $599 for the unit and include 16GB of memory. I also further speculate that Apple will continue to sell the EDGE based iPhone for $299 or less.
Do you suspect that 3G and a boosted capacity will be the only improvements?
Surely it will also have a higher spec camera and a boosted battery life.
Is it possible for them to put GPS in the phone? That could be a good feature as well. Especially since the screen is large and easier to read than those smaller screened phones that have GPS.
Why the heck was the phone released without 3G in the first place ? Jobs and Apple should have waited until they could have included 3G chipset. Do it right the first time! What is the matter with these people ?
I don’t think you can expect a boosted battery life and 3G together. 3G takes way too much power at this point, which is part of the reason it wasn’t included in the first place (Acc. to Steve).
Fun Fact – It’s ‘Heel’ when referring to anatomy, and ‘Heal’ when referring to recovery.
How about Outlook sync so it’s not just a damn toy.
