Load OSX 10.5 Leopard on the eeePC

So, ever since I got the eeePC I’ve loved how easy it is to tinker with. Since I’m not a Linux guy, I dumped the Xandros preload and opted for Windows XP so I could you my EVDO USB datacard and blogging software easier, but I wondered could I install OSX on it? And, after trial and error - you can!
The only problem is that the eeePC only supports SSE2 instead of the SSE3 that Leopard is coded for. Kinda a bummer, and will require some extra tinkering to coax the OS on the eeePC. Thankfully Adam’s awesome tutorial over at Lifehacker provided an excellent foundation on how to do these hacks.
First, download the Brazil Mac Hack from OSX86 Scene. This patch helps you create a X86 version of Leopard you can install on generic PC’s.
Once that is done, you will need an DMG of Leopard, if you have a Mac you can create and Image in Disk Utility - just make sure your self created image is called osx-leopard105.dmg and it should be saved on your desktop. Or you can skip all the steps below and download Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard [ToH]-RC2 SSE3/SSE2 Intel Only from your favorite BitTorent site - scroll down to the point where you see Leopard is now installed.
Should you choose to create your own image and patch it. Quoting from Adam’s tutorial:
After you’ve downloaded the zipped patch files, unzip the archive and drag all of the contents of the archive to your desktop (it should contain two files and three folders in total).
Now open the 9a581-patch.sh shell script in your favorite text editor. At the top of the file, replace XXX with your username on your Mac (so that it reflects the path to your current desktop).
While we’re at it, let’s edit the 9a581PostPatch.sh file as well. This time, edit the fourth and fifth lines at the top of the file to look like this:
PATCH="/Volumes/LeopardPatch/leopatch/" # path to the patched extensions
LEO="/Volumes/Leopard" # path to Leopard installationSave and close both files.
Finally, it’s time to patch the DVD. Open up Terminal, type sudo -s, then enter your administrative password (your login password). Then type cd Desktop and hit Enter. Now you’re ready to apply the patch. Keep in mind that you’ll need plenty of space on your hard drive to perform the patch. I had around 20GB of free space when I did it, though I’m sure you could get away with less. To execute the patch, type:
./9a581-patch.shand hit Enter. The patch will now execute
You will also need to download a patched SSE2 kernel from here. When thats downloaded, unzip it on your desktop.
Open up terminal and type:
sudo hdiutil attach -readwrite $path_to_patch_dvd -owners on
Where $path_to_patch_dvd is the location of the actual ISO on your desktop. The terminal will prompt you for a password, enter your user password.
Then the ISO will mount in read/write mode. Drag the SSE2 mach_kernel you downloaded before to the ISO and replace the existing file. Eject the mounted volume and burn to DVD.
This will then create a SSE2 compliant Leopard DVD.
Once the DVD is created, plug in a DVD drive into the USB port of your eeePC and set the boot order in the eeePC’s BIOS to read from the USB drive first. When the eeePC starts you will get a DOS like screen asking if you want to start the installation or hit F8 for options. Hit F8.
You’ll now see the boot: prompt. Enter -v -x and press Enter
After about 15 or 20 minutes the MacOS X graphical installer will launch.
Quoting again from Adam’s write up:
Format the install drive: I know that you’re raring to install now that you’re finally here, but there’s one thing we need to do first: Format our hard drive so that it’s prepared to receive the Leopard installation. So go to Utilities in the menu bar and select Disk Utility (if you don’t have a working mouse yet, you can still access the menu bar from the keyboard). Once Disk Utility fires up, it’s time to format the drive. Here’s how:
Select your hard drive in the left sidebar.
Click on the tab labeled Partition.
Select a 1 partition Volume Scheme, name the volume Leopard, and choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the format.
Last, click the Options button and choose Master Boot Record as the partition scheme.
Now that your drive is ready, so are you.Install Leopard: This really is the easiest part—just follow the on-screen instructions and choose your newly created Leopard partition as the install destination. Then, before you make that final click on the Install button, click Customize and de-select Additional Fonts, Language Translations, and X11. These components were removed so we could fit everything on the patched DVD, so we won’t be installing them now.
If you did everything right, Leopard is now installed. I didn’t seem to need to run any of the post install steps in Adam’s tutorial so I’m not going to write those steps up. It is highly recommended that if you are not geeky (or very unsure of any of the steps above), I suggest you download Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard [ToH]-RC2 SSE3/SSE2 Intel Only from your favorite BitTorent site.
I’ve noticed that Leopard is a bit pokey on the eeePC because of its slow processor and 512MB of RAM. I ultimately opted for a file called Mac OS X 10.4.8 [JaS AMD-Intel-SSE2-SSE3 with PPF1 & PPF2].iso that I found on a popular BitTorrent site that seems rock solid on my eeePC.
Also for those worried that they will destroy their eeePC - You shouldn’t. Aseus encourages you to install Windows, which requires you to destroy the default Linux setup. They created an awesome bootable restore DVD which you can use restore the machine to factory settings at anytime. Just like brand new.
The eeePC is really a great hobbiest computer.
Questions or comments? Drop them in the post. I’m still tinkering with the OS, and will report back on what works and what doesn’t. Thanks again to Lifehackers excellent tutorial. Without it, I would have never been able to get past step one.

How rugged are the eeePC’s Dan? I’ve read the reviews, but after reading this, the only thing holding me back is that fear of cheap plastic.

Great job Dan! One quick question: how much storage is left from the initial 4 GB flash memory after you installed Leopard?

Adam says he still needs the osx patched dvd in the optical drive to boot, is it also the case with the eeepc? while i’m very excited with this, I surely don’t want to carry my dvd drive everywhere to boot :-)

I didn’t need the Optical disk for the finish… or for boot. Maybe it has to do with the sse2 patch.

And everything works just fine? WiFi? keyboard? Trackpad? No glitches, crashes, or weird things?
How much storage space do you have left after this?

So, don’t you feel at all bothered by the fact that you are recommending people go out and *steal* OSX? I have no problem with trying to install OSX onto 3rd party hardware assuming that you’ve purchased a copy, but telling people to go out on bittorrent and jack it is just kinda slimey.

If you try the hack and do go a BitTorrent route, I would expect at a minimum you would buy a copy of MacOS X. There are no excuses for stealing.

“So, don’t you feel at all bothered by the fact that you are recommending people go out and *steal* OSX?”
Jim D, don’t you feel like slime yourself for suggesting that Dan is saying that? The way I read it, he used OS X from a Bittorrent download because it was easier than creating a disk image from his own copy of the OS. Or should he perhaps pretend that file sharing doesn’t exist?
By the way, it’s not called theft but infringement. The difference exists for a reason.

Can we get a rundown of the driver “support”?
Full resolution of monitor supported?
3D Acceleration supported?
Core Image supported?
All keys supported?
Trackpad moves the mouse?
Trackpad buttons do left and right-click?
Webcam works?
*No, not by default; still in testing
Built-in speakers work?
Exterior ports work? (USB, VGA, Audio in/out)
Card Reader works?
Built in Ethernet works?
Wifi works? (B? G?)
Thanks for forcing this through just to see if it works :)

Thanks Dan,
The very first thing I thought of when I saw the eeePC was how long untill OSX is running. You could also install OSX onto a fash drive and boot from there.
***BTW Dan, I have been running OSX86 for sometime now and the best install I have found is one called “XxX osx86 10.4.10″***and it’s only a 1.86GB DL

So i got the patched version of 10.4.8 that you mentioned in the article and i am confused on what my next course of action is. You say to skip to the part where it says “leopard is now installed” but if i skip to that part then nothing has been accomplished. Do i still need to download the SSE2 kernel or can i just skip to the part of installing it with an external DVD drive?

The “dvd-required-to-boot” problem is fixed by setting the osX partition to “active.” You can use the terminal or even a boot disk with the appropriate utilities installed. Eg acronis

Good stuff Dan! A lot of readers are asking the same question: what works, and what doesn’t?
Top of the pile would have to be wifi and auto suspend when the lid is closed.

Quick note - on a flash-based storage medium, using a Journalled filesystem is almost certainly a very bad idea: the use of a journal at least doubles the number of writes performed as data is written to the journal then flushed to its final location. Even with flash’ built-in wear-levelling technology, this will drastically reduce the lifetime of the part.
(I don’t know if MacOS supports an option similar to ‘noatime’ on Linux to prevent constant metadata updates, but this would also be beneficial. Additionally, disabling the new FSEvents system by touching a file named ‘/.fseventsd/no_log’ (see http://arstechnica.com/reviews/os/mac-os-x-10-5.ars/7 ) will be another big in for longevity. Finally, some method of disabling swap or moving swap to a different location would help immeasurably - but probably isn’t possible. Constant use of swap files is probably what will, in the end, kill the flash drive. See http://hardware.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=07/11/14/218235 for further discussion.)

I am delighted with the eeepc AS IS but bought it basically to tide me over ’til Apple comes out with their own TinyLappie.
Given that the early rumors are that Apple’s gonna come out with a slimmed down Macbook (that is, retain the 13″ formfactor), this hack looks everbetter.
I have no problem with the idea of buying a Mac license but still using torrent if it makes the install better, but can I buy a TIGER license? I have oodles of Tiger DVDs laying about but they may not be the best choice(s) for this hack.
Dan, did you get wifi working by pulling the driver(s) off the Restore disc? How snappy is it with Tiger? Were you able to do Tiger by following the Leopard directions but replacing every [Leopard] step with a [Tiger]?
Thank you for showing the way.
And for those who ask: The eee pc build quality is AWESOME. And while the keyboard is small, in a mere 3 days my typing on it became QUITE fast. I’m now, however, having trouble typing on my Macbook ’cause my fingers had so easily adapted to the eee’s smaller footprint: Now that I’m back on the macbook (finally got it back from my wife), I can’t seem to get my fingers to relax enough to use either all my fingers or to spread out enough to easily type on what now seems a MASSIVE keyboard. I’m actually looking forward to resuming typing on the eee…

Many people want Apple to sell OS X for pc’s, but in, the meantime, the idea of trying to hack your way in is just too much trouble and downright illegal for me. Interesting to know it can be done, but actually doing it is another matter.
Of course, for some, just being able to do it is most of the fun. Not for me; I would fear the wrath of Apple’s multi-billion dollar legal department, which, in my case, would be too much for this wimp!
I especially wouldn’t advertise or publish the fact if I did. You are obviously braver than I!

Hi
Will be picking my Asus tomorrow. As a Mac user I’d love to put Tiger on mine. In simple(!) terms, if I go for 10.4.8, do I *just* replace it for the Leopard.img mentioned below (still doing the things mentioned before the comment about the 10.5 torrent? Or if I use the Tiger.img, do I need to do all those ‘other’ steps after that point as well?
Apologies if this sounds confusing - I’ve never installed OS X on any Intel stuff before!
“First, download the Brazil Mac Hack from OSX86 Scene. This patch helps you create

JIM D - I would say that your comment saying it’s slimey is ‘piss-poor’. Dan is just making it easier for people who might not have the technical knowledge in compliling their own dmg file. And yes, I would download the 10.4.8 version myself to just not deal with the headache. It’s a suggestion JIM so if you don’t like it, don’t use the image and give Dan a break.
Oh and by the way even if you do buy the disk, you’re still breaking Apple’s policy of loading the os on a system not branded ‘APPLE’.

@andrewiswise.com
You don’t need a portable DVD player, just a USB to IDE cable, and your PC, (provided it doesn’t have a SATA DVD player) The catch being you need external power. So you pull the side off your PC, yank the IDE cable out of the back of your DVD player, insert the USB cable, and then plug it into the Eee, I do it with spare IDE drives all the time, The cable cost about $10 or so.

Dan, are you still going to do a followup with more details on how to install Tiger? I tried using the DVD image you recommended (JaS) however after installation it boots up onto a blue screen and hangs, or it comes up with an all-screwed-up dark blue one with a spinning beachball.
Could you tell me which packages you selected from the installation DVD? I couldn’t fit them all in due to disk size and I might have left the wrong ones out.
Strange enough, the installer seems to work perfectly. It even accurately shows the battery charge status.

Ok, I got it sort-of working now too with the JaS Tiger (for some reason I had to install the GMA950 as well as the GMA900 driver) but it crashes half the time when starting up and every time when shutting down (have to hold the power button to shut it down). Neither wired or wireless is working though.
Performance is OK though when it is running! Thanks for the tips in getting it going and if you would make some more detailed tutorials I would really appreciate it.

Ok, I am at a complete loss for WiFi, the monitor not being at the full resolution is driving me wild, and I haven’t even had time to let the other non-working stuff bother me. I am running OS X, though, which is fun for novelty. But other than that, it’s crippled.
Nov 21st, 2007

You can set the default resolution in the boot.plist (or something like that, look it up.) This is a hackers novelty toy, it was never going to work out of the box, the joy was always going to be in *making* it work.
You’re essentially running a pirate unsupported operating system designed for proprietary hardware, on a feature reduced child’s laptop, based on the say so of some anonymous blogger. I hope this clarifies your support issues.
If you want full functionality go buy a mac, or wait for them to announce their new mini laptop.

Jim,
I found that I had to run the whole process twice. After the install, boot from the DVD again and run the installer again, but uncheck everything. The install button will say upgrade, but it seems to install some more items. I still have verying success actually booting the laptop, but it works when the boot finally happens.
Nov 23rd, 2007

Ok, I’ll give you a brief rundown:
Without advanced hackery (which I am incapable of), the following are not working:
Wi-Fi, audio, camera, mic, full-resolution, and laptop-type functionality.
Until all of these are fixed and are available in an easy-to-follow walkthrough, it’s absolutely pointless.
Not to mention that every single window outstretches the screen, it’s just too small. Also, all of the eye-candy of OS X slows to a crawl. Applications launch quickly, though.
Nov 23rd, 2007
MaDTweakeR
The monitor works in full res (800×480) if you use the JaS installer as described in the article, and enable the extra GMA900 and GMA950 drivers. Unfortunately that version booted very erratically (sometimes it would take me 10 tries to boot successfully) so I gave up and put the default Linux image back on my EEE.
Also Ethernet, Wifi, Sound and Cam weren’t working so it was pretty useless anyway. But it was kind of cool to see OS X on my EEE just once :)

To the guys calling bullshit because the only photos so far are of the boot screen, I sympathise. The Eee hangs at the boot screen with the normal install.
However I’ve done some work and got the first stage - booting to the desktop - so it’s not bullshit at all, just needs some fine tuning.

@XXX:
Of course I tried installing only the GMA900 driver first, but it shows just a very distorted picture on bootup then, kind of like when the screen is smashed. I had to install both the GMA900 and GMA950 drivers to get any picture after the install. Maybe the 900 driver uses a file installed by the 950. And yes, you can install drivers you don’t need, they just don’t get used. Most people install the whole package of drivers, I just didn’t do that because of disk space concerns on the EEE.

Are you guys serious? If I could get Leopard working I’d certainly give it a go, the thing is this hack is difficult enough on a desktop let alone a highly portable eeePC! I’d also have reservations about installing it given the mention above of:
“Quick note - on a flash-based storage medium, using a Journalled filesystem is almost certainly a very bad idea: the use of a journal at least doubles the number of writes performed as data is written to the journal then flushed to its final location. Even with flash’ built-in wear-levelling technology, this will drastically reduce the lifetime of the part.”
That’s pretty serious ppl, why would you install that instead of something like PCLinuxOS which has Beryl? Hell would Beryl even run on the eeePC? If that would work it’d certainly be damn cool IMO. It’s much more sophisticated and cooler.
So what will you do?

it’s slow to load, when it does. Once in the OS it feels like regular osx except when it’s animating something ( draws sliding out , genie effect etc ).
As long as it doens’t need to animate anything it responds & handles like my g4 ibook. I have a large yojimbo libary that I loaded onto it & it went fine, searches & accessing pages within it were no different to anyother mac I’ve used. Yeah & Dan the no wifi post is starting to suck

One thing I don’t understand is how in the world you are supposed to use the OS X terminal if you don’t have OS X….isn’t that kind of defeating the purpose? I mean, I’m installing OS X because I don’t already have it. So how am I supposed to access the terminal to apply the patch?

Hi,
I was just wondering-to take the easy way out (downloading the image from BitTorrent), can I just download this on the Linux OS that eee PC comes with? What exactly would I have to do after I get it off of BitTorrent? Thanks,

Okay, I am trying to put 10.4.8 on EEE but it’s not working. I downloaded the pre-hacked disc out there and got it to install by booting from the DVD-R, formatting my drive and installing. All went well, EXCEPT there bit about, click the disk name then Partitions, then the Options tab to select Master Boot Record. The Options button DOES NOT exist in the 10.4.x installer, even hitting the green resize button to make sure I’m viewing everything I should be seeing in the small screen.
So, I’ve moved ahead with installation. When I reboot though, I get a kernal panic every time. I have not been able to do any “post install tweaking” as was done in the original Hackintosh article, as the patches aren’t on the 10.4.8 disk image. I don’t know why it’s crashing although is the Master Boot Record a possibility? Not sure if it were a total requirement.
So to recap, I’ve got a pristine EEE PC with 10.4.8 (the hacked version) installed properly on it. But no “post-install” patching done (the stuff that some said weren’t needed in Leopard at least). I cannot see any way to set the internal disk to, say, GUID as it required most of the time, there’s no option button showing at all just Split, Delete, Revert and Parition along the bottom of the screen, above the disk information (SILICONMOTION SM223AC, ATA, Internal, etc.) I appear to be seeing everything on the screen, as I’ve resized it all properly.
So can anyone help me out?
Dec 16th, 2007
Tom
I have installed 10.4.8 on an Eee successfully, be sure NOT to select the option called “most common hardware support”. It trys to load some stuff that doesn’t work on the eee. Unfortunately, the screen becomes 640×480, and wifi doesn’t work, and I haven’t tried a hardwired ethernet connection, but it might not worth either. So 10.4.8 is functional, but not very useful on the eee. I know your question was about the MBR setting, but I think that already defaults to the right thing from the disk image your downloaded.
I hope this helps

Reading this and other sites it seems that part of the problem is that the 900Mhz CPU is clocked down to 600Mhz. This apparently causes a lot of problems for OSX because it believes the system when it reports a 900Mhz CPU.
There are various fixes including an old Bios (8804) for the machine that allows a 100Mhz FSB/900MHZ CPU clock
See here.

@Dan: Gratz.
Only thing I will say is that I think by and large, you may find you’re better off with the pre-installed xandros. Any other OS (especially the way one shoehorns Mac OS X into machines at present) is a bit too fiddly plus if you don’t have SSE3 and/or recent intel chipset, my understanding is the EFI hacks at the moment do not allow you to run an unpatched kernel (hence no updates).
Apple is definitely FTL for tying down their OS to machines. And having us pay a premium for crap desktop hardware. I mean… do the math.
But due respect - their laptops are pretty cool - when they are not having heat or battery problems.
@Jim D: sigh… It’s people like you that make Apple and M$ the monsters they are. You are definitely FTL.

It’s illegal to install OSX on hardware other than mac hardware, so even if you buy OSX it’s still illegal. But they are doing it for a reason, if evereybody was able to install OSX on their PC’s, there would be load of driver issues, and then people would say that macs are no different from PC’s.

there are a few things that i would like to say here.
1st- the whole crap about the journaled flash drive can simply be fixed by making it a non journaled partition.
2nd- it did take some tweeking and when i say tweeking i mean alot of it to get wireless working so it is possible.
3rd- my eeepc mac is running Mac OS 10.4.8 to the fullest, the only downfall is it won’t keep time and dial up drivers are a null.
4th- it seems that by running the apple updates it fixes alot of the bugs in the system its self (like the built in webcam)
over all i find that alot of the guides out there explaining how to put mac on the eeepc arn’t the greatest. i personally said screw it and figured it out my self and by the sounds of it my eeepc is more operational. now i’m not saying that what i did is the best way (i do have 9 years of software development with IBM under my belt).
If There are any Questions i will try to help.
one last thing, i’m currently working on a driver package Mac OS 10.4 to run on the eeepc. its a little harder then i thought so it will be some time.

OK, to all those claiming this is not legal, go find a better case. If you own the software, you own the software. Apple cannot write laws, only a licensing agreement. Their licensing agreement says you cannot install OS X on any non-Mac, but this threat is not supported by law and is therefore irrelevant. ALL that Apple can do is say that they will not support certain hardware (which by the way, they don’t). If you feel like going through this for the sake of installing software you own on hardware you own, go for it. You can’t expect Apple or anyone to have answers or adequate support for the problems you encounter.
@Luke, keep us posted on that driver set.
@Naysayers, get over it.
Thanks all!

You seriously must disable swapping to the SSD, and of course metadata refreshs und journaling. Your harddrive will not live very long without these things!

Oh for god’s sake. Give me a break on all this legal and non-legal nonsense. It’s beautiful that it is possible and all the hackers/programmers should receive a greater deal of respect for their job. I do not think that Apple is going to suffer a whole lot from this. They still sell their macs.

Why don’t you just buy a second hand macbook off ebay, you’ll have roughly the same processor and ram. Bigger hd and osx will run better.
But well done anyway mate, sure it was fun to do
Jan 25th, 2008

Marcus, thank you. You are absolutely correct. :D
As soon as Luke makes that driver set, I’m buying one of these. I might buy one anyway and try to do it myself, it just depends how long he takes. I just want to be sure the WiFi and sound will work, or at least have instructions on how to make them work.
P.S. I already own two Macs and three versions of Mac OS X, so no one could really say that I’m ripping Apple off anyway!

Jan 25th, 2008

Yeh, that sucks witht Swap file and journalling in Leopard. Leopard just isn’t built for flash SSD storage. Even when you look at the Macbook Air, it comes with a normal Hardddrive. I would expect SSD be available for this type of machine. In terms of the wear on the Flash drive, you are really better by installing Win XP or of course Xandrox, since X. doens’t use swap or journaling.
Yeh, I would love to show off Leo on my eeepc… But till this particular thing along with some hardware driver compatibility issues are solved, I’ll hold off. Just my 5 cents.
Jan 25th, 2008
Tyler
I forgot to mention - the guy who posted above under the name “None” made an interesting point - you eventually would wear out a solid-state drive, what I’m wondering is would it really be that fast? The way I understand it, each time you overwrite the data, you basically etch off a layer of the storage unit, and the number of layers is finite. I had the impression, though, that you could overwrite the whole device several thousand times before wearing it out. Can anyone verify these details, and have there been any other cases of computers running for extended periods of time on an SSD? I’d like to not worry about reliability issues if I do buy one of these, which I probably will in the next few months.
The next question is for Dan, or anyone who already owns an Eee PC. When you open the BIOS, (F2 key?) can you set the boot priority of the card in the SD slot to be higher than the built-in SSD? If so, if/when you wear out the SSD you could just start booting from a 4GB or 8GB SD card instead. If you’re running Leopard, you could do Time Machine on a real hard drive, and if anything fails you will still have a backup.
My next question is for Mac users. I have used OS X Tiger for quite some time now, and I always owned a Mac before that. In the old Mac OS you could set the amount of ‘Virtual Memory’ used by the system, but X seems to just arbitrarily take as much as it needs (which is a good idea, it can be hard to guess how much extra memory is really needed). My question, prompted by None’s post, is CAN you disable file swapping in Tiger or Leopard? You would want a ton of RAM (like 2 GB) if you were going to do that, but it still would be useful to know how. I haven’t seen a way to do that in the System Preferences.
My final question is about Linux. Doe Linux write swap files like OS X does? Can you disable or reduce the amount of file swapping in Linux? Would the Xandros system that ships with the Eee have options for this? Does anyone know of a good Linux that LOOKS (and preferably acts) similar to OS X, or would it be better to just mod some existing distro? OK, I know it was a long post, sorry, but I do hope that it adds something good to the discussion. Thanks for your input.

I have been a mac user for 5 years and I really had no interest in the eee pc until i ran across your blog. my MacBook is starting to feel a little bloated and the idea of a mac i can practically stick in my back pocket for $300 is pretty nice. i have been trying to wade through the discussion here and i just wanted to clarify.
can you install 10.4 or 10.5 with full usb/wifi/webcam functionality?
it seems like there have been a lot of add-ons since the original instructions at the top of the page. can you repost the step-by-step with all of the updated tips and tricks?
ps i already own legit copies of 10.4 and 10.5 so i don’t have any problem downloading a tweaked copy online
Jan 27th, 2008
Tyler
Kyle,
It looks like a few people have managed, the consensus is that 10.5 is pretty slow. Several people have had issues with at least the WiFi, Ethernet, sound, and convincing the OS that the screen is 800×480 instead of 640×480. I don’t remember reading anything about the webcam, though. I think this could work, but it would be quite a process to get all of the features working. I’ve been thinking about getting one, but am holding out for a better step-by-step.
Oh yeah, the original poster (Dan) seems to be sorta MIA, he hasn’t posted in quite a while so you may not get an answer from him.

10.4.8 with diabolik GMA900 fixer runs well, both QE / CI enabled at 800*480. Quicktime movies run smooth, iTunes music good. In VLC movies are good, sound doesnt work well, it’s a no go.
Wifi can be fixed by buying an airport mini PCI-E wifi card, and replacing the ATHEROS wireless one in your eee. You can easily find an airport mini PCI-E compatible card on eBay, about US20. It will work natively with apple airport drivers. The hardware replacement is featured on dozen of wikis.
Journalled/non journalled: at install just pick non-journalled, it works fine.
Apart from the sound issue in VLC, there is one more problem. My eee only successfully boots 10.4.8 1 out of 10 times, otherwise hangs on a blue screen (no joke). This is really big problem. And the timing in OS X is off, every second takes like 2 or 3 seconds.

Nice howto, but most of those steps are now superfluous if you get the kalyway 10.5.1 dvd which is prepatched. No need to do any script stuff or anything, and it runs pretty well, with *all* the usual caveats for osx86 (wifi, keyboard/mouse issues, gfx drivers, etc). And yes, the SSE2 emulator is included and works on my vaio laptop (vgn-tx1).

If we ever want this to be more than a limited hack for the “I just wanted to see if i could do it” folks, we are going to need a full set of drivers for all of the standard ASUS hardware. No more ‘bridge the pins on the vga’, or ‘no audio input/output support’, I mean everything working. So, it is time to put my money where my mouth is.
I WILL GIVE A $50 REWARD TO ANYONE WHO CAN PROVIDE A FULL SET OF DRIVERS.
This means drivers for all of the standard system hardware: Audio (input/output/speakers), Wireless, Video (including VGA output), Webcam, Ethernet. The person who provides the drivers also must provide step-by-step instructions on how to install them on an eee running 10.4.x
Of course all of this is dependent on testing them out. Whatever drivers I receive, of course I will make available to everyone else by posting them here or somewhere else online. I just want to see the project moved along, and selfishly I want a usable eee running os x
Let the games begin!

Kuaile, although you mean well and are chomping at the bit to get this working for you, $50 is kind of pointless. In most Western economies at least, it’s considered pocket change. If it’s going to come down to money, an offer of $500 might realistically speed things up given the time involved and the skill level. However judging by what I’ve read above people who are enthusiastically working on this aren’t doing it for money and offers of money won’t speed anything up.

I will match the $50 reward. I want to use osx on my eee as well but can’t deal with the current limitations. I dont have the skill set to develop the drivers myself but I do have $50 for someone that does.

I have just about read the whole thread, but like others, I am still confused about what will and what will not work. Happycar has obviously done some great work, but his utube video shows the use of an outboard mouse. Does this mean that the built in track pad does not work? Also dem shows iTunes and web, but what about an app like Word, will it run that OK?
I am going to order an eeePC with 8Gig with 1Meg of RAM to give it the best chance of success, but to all of you very clever people out there i will need some help! Keep up the outstanding work.
And Luke, how is it going with the full driver set? Like others I am happy to pay for them.
PS Is the general view that OS X10.4 is the best bet, or should I go for OS X10.5?

I think this hack is great and may eventually develop into something I have been looking for. I cannot find any program that is equivalent to OS X’s Garageband. Not anything that is as easy to use with my U-key midi keyboard. I’ve tried several Windows programs but they are usually over complicated with a poor GUI. My U-key keyboard plugs into the USB port and plays all the instruments Garageband has to offer on my MacBook Pro, but I want something that is small and portable and easy to replace if stolen without breaking my budget. I wish to give one to my daughter and school theft problems are unfortunately common.
Have you tried any Midi Keyboards with Garageband ? Is the latency acceptable?

great! do you think it’ll ever be possible to install OS X on the new HP 2133? because it doesn’t have intel processors, but VIA. well, answer is probably no, which really sucks, because the aluminum case of the HP is really a lot apple like, would be great to actually turn it into an apple, but HP had to destroy that dream.

Hello!
I was wondering if any progress had been made on this?
I won’t be buying my eeePC until I know for sure that I can run either; tiger or leopard.
Please reply with drivers and/or howto’s!
Thanks in advance,
Panarchy

Dan, important question, the eee PC you instaled Mac OS-X on , was it overclocked to 900mhz or was its processor running at its normal speed? Was it maxed out on RAM?
I just wonder how these two variables would affect the speed of the OS.
Any thoughts on how ‘well’ Mac OS-X will work on the new eee PC 900? I guess on the first variant (i.e. more RAM(?) but same processor) there won’t be that much of a difference, but on the ones which have the ATOM processor, should hopefuly be even faster.

Did it take several minutes (5+) to get past the very first screen (Select a language)? And several more minutes with a spinning beachball for each screen?
