EEEPC Love At UNEASYcentral – Am I Crazy?

I’ve always been a mobile computing snob. I want a computer that is small, light, good battery, able to connect to 3G networks and cheap.

I was always able to find some combination of the above requirements from various manufacturers – but nothing cheap. I think I found something that fits the bill with the Asus eeePC.

The specs for the device are very deceiving. I thought I would never be able move beyond the Xandros linux preinstalled, but after installing Windows XP on the eeePC I found the little guy to still be quite snappy.

At first glance this laptop is perfect for mobile professionals who just need to email, word process, VPN or web surf.

A full review is due shortly, but to quote an email I sent to Derek this machine is small, cheap and fast – certainly worth a look as a traveling laptop or a desktop companion.

Personally,I fancy it quite a lot and consider buying one.But the screen is a huge turn off,the resolution it is able to do is too slow and the black bolders around it make it seem even smaller.

Is this the $400 one? Seems a bit light for $400, about the cost of a regular low-end laptop with ALOT more to it.

I thought there was a $200 version, that I could do.

  3. Larry says:

4GB doesn’t seem like much once you put XP on there. But, I agree, seems like there are a lot more fully-featured notebooks for just a little bit more.

    I think a contest is in order…

this would be perfect for lunch (in all seriousness), the other day we had to cut lunch short and get back to the office because of some malformed code and a server alert bothering the entire dev team of where I work, if we had one of these bad boys running ubuntu with a VPN client, we’d probably still be sitting there drinking pints and talking nerd.

4GB more than enough for “Windows Fundamentals”, not the “complete install” but this will never be your primary computer…

    Very interesting.

Chad is on the right track. For the price I think the Eee PC is a great buy. I’m twiddling my thumbs trying to figure out if I should just go ahead and order one. I think it was about time that I accustomed myself with Linux on a regular basis.

One question out there for anyone who has used it, how is it with Gimp?

  8. Dan says:

The secret sauce is using Windows.

  9. Emory says:

but it seemed so good! Why soil it with Windows. Load up ubuntu and it takes up less space and runs quicker!

  10. Dan says:

But it won’t work with my EVDO Novatel card then.

I really love the Eee PC and have it on my list for christmas. I probably won’t get it because $400 is too expensive but, I can still admire the wonderful device. I can’t wait for my local best buy to get them in stock so I can go to the store and play with one.

I am starting to think that this is 100% advertising.

  13. I want it! I want it! I want it! But it’s not available yet on my country :(

So I guess I’ll have to content with some $500 12″ laptop (there are some here, Acer mostly) and add a 12 or 16 cell battery to keep me company on the road

I got my eeepc701 4g a few days ago, the linux os it ok but i think i will be installing XP soon, i really want mobile broadband in the uk and also not being able to print to my wireless lexmark printer is a right pain.

It will be a shame to lose all the other bundled apps with linux but mobile internet is the main reason i bouhgt it..

And at £219 its right bargain, yes you can get a cheap notebook for about £299 but then you get very poor battery life, and its not portable, unless you carry a huge bag with your laptop PSU and cables and having a normal laptop on your shoulder for more than 30 minutes really starts to ache.
And a sub 12″ notebook with cost closer to £1000, some nearly £2000.

Its never going to replace my home laptop but if they can get a larger screen and more storage built in maybe next year it will.
