My, what green roofs you have.
Apparently growing grass on your roof is the new fad to be part of. To be fair, the benefits to this are said to be less runoff from rain, cooler house, protection of the roof from natural elements and providing a house for birds/insects. I’m not sure how I feel about this, to be honest. On one hand it might be really cool to have grass on your house. On the other hand… you have grass on your house. Does anyone even want to deal with roof gophers? Let me be first to claim using grass toupees. You heard it here first.

i blame L.O.T.R and hobbits
ya you not getting me to mow that.
Yah, how do you mow it?
There are types of grass (more in the moss family) that don’t grow very long. Mowing isn’t necessary. This is a good idea to add greenspace where needed, however I would be more concerned about the additional weight it would put on the structure of your home. Also if – like me – you live in a part of the world where winter is a harsh reality (it gets to – 35 C, or -31 F) there moisture in the soil when frozen will turn into 3 inches of ice on your roof, never mind the sow on top of that AND the fact that it will look like crap until you rake it in the spring. Yeah, this idea is better served for taller buildings in warmer climates.
My local store (here in Holland) did this a couple of years ago. It looked real nice at first ,,, but now it is just a brown mess … not sure it is getting enough water ..
In Colorado Springs your not allowed to capture runoff water from your roof because a lot of the water supply here is from runoff. So if this limits runoff, it might not be looked highly upon.
Your “grass toupee” idea was taken years ago, in spirit at least, by the Saturday Night Live skit for “Chia Hair.”
