Sprint Now Unlocking Phones

Now, it has been a long standing policy for GSM providers to unlock a cellphone after a few months of paid service or after a paid in full account termination but CDMA providers have long enjoyed the ability to keep their phones locked to their network. Sprint, due to a settlement to a lawsuit, is going to be the first CDMA provider to UNLOCK their phones for use on other providers and allowed no Sprint devices on their network.

The move will allow other unlocked handsets to function on Sprint’s network, but whether the reverse will occur with the other carriers is yet to be seen. For ex-Sprint customers who are happy with their phones but want to move to a different provider, it will not be imperative to purchase a new handset for the switch.

Now, if Verizon or Altell will follow suit I think this can be REALLY great news.
