OiNK.CD Shut Down!

Popular music torrent site OiNK.cd has been shut down by the IFPI and other organizations with acronyms. It seems as though these private sites are going down a lot lately. OiNK.cd was a massively popular site for music and applications but was pretty hard to get an invite to, being strict about ratios. The shut down has lead to the arrest of a 24 year old man in England and a major ripple in the bittorrent community. Any OiNK users reading? Anyone have ideas about what could happen to users? According to the site now:

A criminal investigation continues into the identities and activities of the site’s
    users

When Suprnova shut down, was it a private site? Did anything ever happen to any users? I’m sure people want to know.

    Wow,
This is big big news, I can’t believe Oink got shut down. Where was it based/located?
If it was in England I can see why, most of these sites I would think are in countries where the laws are a little different. I hope all the users are going to be safe. And I dont see why they went after Oink, and not one of the many open sites out there.{ Limewire, etc }.
Maybe because that is just an app and not an actual site.

    Great story UNEASYsilence!
BTW, Not sure if you are still thinking about the name change, if you are don’t,
UNEASY is a great and well known name:)

Serves them right for a) Not giving me an invite b) Choosing a name that reminds me of that awful “Charlotte’s Web” crap.

  3. Amedika says:

    Nooooo!
Hey Naser, I would have invited you. You just have to ask the right people, although I can see how you wouldn’t ask me considering you probably didn’t know I was a member haha.
Am I at risk though? Cause I don’t think I can take any fines or anything right now!
Help! I don’t really think they can trace I.P’s or anything can they?

  4. My first time ever being caught by the RIAA was from Oink.co.uk

I received a letter in the mail, making me sign a contract saying I would never download again. Fortunately, my ISP did not give out my address, so the contract was issued by my ISP (making for a better consequence)

All from Oink!!! Forget private trackers, stay to the flooded public trackers.

  5. Nathaniel says:

So yeah, lately I’ve been thinking of discontinuing my use of torrents. I think this one settles it. Here’s to hoping no repercussions.

Thank goodness iTunes is going the non-DRM route.

    >>Am I at risk though? Cause I don’t think I can take any fines or anything right now!
    >>Help! I don’t really think they can trace I.P’s or anything can they?

seems like the scare tactics are working ;)

  7. Former Oink User Who Now Wishes to Remain Unnamed says:

All of the press releases (ie http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1572554/20071023/id_0.jhtml) are talking about oink being a hotbed of prereleases, which it was. Unfortunately oink recorded the ips and snatches and uploads of EVERY user. Now, do you think they are going to go after the

  8. Ian says:

I suggest people read the UC Riverside study “P2P – Is Big Brother Watching You?” Very interesting read, and quite useful if you are security minded (like me) and use BitTorrent.

  9. chad says:

hey, if they can prove I never bought the CD, they can have the $14 I owe em ;)

  10. Naser says:

Heh..track me? I’m from one of the most corrupt and poor 3-rd World Countries baby :) There is no law here but the law of hypocrisy and evasion. I’d like to “SEE” them try that. Infact, I think I should’ve starred in “Catch Me if You Can” instead of DeCaprio.

In Bangladesh (oops, thats where I kinda live) you can obtain a cd of commercial softwares worth 26,000 USD in cash for under 80 cents (For real? Heck yeah), and there are frankly infinitesimal shops who do that. .Our ISPs never track us, because they never feel the need to shoo off pesky cyber-criminals in a country where a guy/gal is mugged/raped/hijacked/kidnapped/act in a documentary by “Discovery” channel titled “Poverty in the south-east asia”/what-not every 3 seconds or so.

So,yeah..I do regret having a crappy internet connection sometimes, but seeing high-speed broadband users trying to keep their tail clean works as a good consolation too :D
