Apple to Release an SDK for the iPhone and iPhone Touch
This post was published 2 years 5 months 4 days ago which may make its actuality or expire date not be valid anymore. This site is not responsible for any misunderstanding.Steve in another one of his classic open letters has personally confirmed that in February (my guess is the absolute last day) an SDK for the iPhone and iPod Touch will be released.
Let me just say it: We want native third party applications on the iPhone, and we plan to have an SDK in developers’ hands in February. We are excited about creating a vibrant third party developer community around the iPhone and enabling hundreds of new applications for our users. With our revolutionary multi-touch interface, powerful hardware and advanced software architecture, we believe we have created the best mobile platform ever for developers.
It will take until February to release an SDK because we’re trying to do two diametrically opposed things at once—provide an advanced and open platform to developers while at the same time protect iPhone users from viruses, malware, privacy attacks, etc. This is no easy task. Some claim that viruses and malware are not a problem on mobile phones—this is simply not true. There have been serious viruses on other mobile phones already, including some that silently spread from phone to phone over the cell network. As our phones become more powerful, these malicious programs will become more dangerous. And since the iPhone is the most advanced phone ever, it will be a highly visible target.
Some companies are already taking action. Nokia, for example, is not allowing any applications to be loaded onto some of their newest phones unless they have a digital signature that can be traced back to a known developer. While this makes such a phone less than “totally open,” we believe it is a step in the right direction. We are working on an advanced system which will offer developers broad access to natively program the iPhone’s amazing software platform while at the same time protecting users from malicious programs.
We think a few months of patience now will be rewarded by many years of great third party applications running on safe and reliable iPhones.
Steve
P.S.: The SDK will also allow developers to create applications for iPod touch. [Oct 17, 2007]
Boy oh boy an SDK and a legally unlocked iPhone all in one day. Around the world fanbois heads are exploding!
January?? Anyone smelling and iPhone 2.0 around that time?? :o
(fingers crossed)
…… I go out and get a blackberry 8320 on tmobile…. 2 days later, SDK announced…. wonderful.
I meant Feb :p
With a VOIP applicatio that works well and working in a place that has WiFi, the iPod Touch could actually replace your phone…
“And since the iPhone is the most advanced phone ever, it will be a highly visible target”
Gooood, god…how can anyone be so full of crap.
@ Dean:
Here’s the logic Steve is using. Steve thinks OS X = most advanced OS yet. The iPhone runs OS X. Therefore, Steve is saying the iPhone is the most advanced phone ever because it runs OS X (This point is debatable; personally, I agree, but some people live and breathe by WinMo and OpenMoko might just give OS X Phone edition a run for its money). He’s not talking about hardware–remember, the article is about how they’re gonna release a SOFTWARE development kit. I don’t think anyone, Jobs included, thinks that the iPhone has the best hardware of any phone out there. Software, though? Quite possibly–and the SDK will be a great help.
Yeah but whatever he means, thats just plain dumb to say.And I myself see myself as a fan of the openmoko service, but don’t really care too much about the first Mobile to use it,its ugly and looks like a toy.
I’m waiting for a “prettier” mobile to use the Openmoko software.
iPhone Touch? :P
