Learn RoR For Free, As In Beer
Posted in Geeky by Evan at 2:30 pm
I never understood why people say “Free as in beer” but they do, and this applies if you want to learn Ruby on Rails. Sitepoint is giving away a book on Ruby on Rails for free. It’s a download, but it’s still free for the next 60 days. If you’re considering learning something like Web Design, CSS, etc. then Sitepoint books are a pretty good resource to check out, having read one of their design books myself.

Free as in beer is to distinguish that kind of free from free as in freedom. They are related concepts, but are subtly different.
Well there we go, you learned me something.
Free beer is free in such a way that it does not have to be paid for. Free people are not slaves that need not be paid for but people who have freedom. Free from price and free from control are two different frees, giving rise to the free beer analogy.
Funny you mention that Free Beer analogy, few hours after i read that and the comments, it was written in some article i was reading. how bout that?
Where the hell is everyone getting the free beer. How come I have never in my 30+ years on the planet seen one single sign for free beer. Free as in beer my ass.
I’m just ahead of the curb like that, Brandon.
I’m thinking Dan needs to get a little microbrew going and start bottling UNEASYbeer. Then give it some away for free. Then of course the saying could be altered forever: free as in UNEASYbeer. How about that?
Ironically, there also is an “open source” beer called “free beer.” I think they sell the beer and give out the instructions with it to make your own.
Rager, really? That could be a good post. evan @ scopetech.net if you know the webpage
so what kind of crazy book would this be if it was free … as in people…. wikipedia? And why don’t people say it’s Free, as in Soylent Green? ;)
now that just makes ones head spin, does it not?
