Run Ubuntu Without The Messy Partitioning
I’ll be honest with you, Ubuntu has saved my life. The live CD has come in extra handy in a time when I was most in need and since then I have wanted to really give Ubuntu a try, not just off a live CD. My problem was that I just wasn’t too interested in learning about partitioning not to mention dreading what might happen if I decided I no longer wanted the Linux install and wanted to get rid of it.
It seems I wasn’t the only one and there’s a way to install Ubuntu as you would any other program in Windows thanks to Wubi. According to the site, it installs Ubuntu in a single file, no need to mess with partitions. It’s not an emulation, Ubuntu will be running on your PC naturally, it’s just installed differently and if you want to delete it, you can uninstall via the Add/Remove programs in Windows that we all know. I’ll be giving this a try when I get my new laptop and I’m sure this will come in handy for those of you wanting to try Linux naturally, not just on a live CD.

Be carefull of this one. I have been wanting to try to put Ubuntu on my laptop for some time now and thought this sounded like the chance. It loaded just fine and I was able to dual boot into Ubuntu. Then Ubuntu locked up with nothing but black on the screen and I had to turn off my computer. When I powered back up Ubuntu wasn’t in the boot list and Windows wouldn’t boot either. Will spend some time to try to fix it and will post again if I figure it out.
This sounds like a great idea and I will probably give it a try again, but not till a few more people have been lab rats first.
Any other experience?
It works great on my dell 4600. Though the only problem is the ubuntu is not compatible with my sound card. No problems with it other than that.
Dont use wubi it is still beta software. You will not get a good first impression of ubuntu. Anyway if you install ubuntu normally it is very easy to recover the partition back to your main partition.
