I got one of them cables at Radio Shack--to plug my iphone into the car's audio in--and only then found out about the pesky width requirement. But unlike you, I bought an adaptor from Apple for $10 (okay, it was part of my $100 "rebate," but still...now I've got an extra layer, which only adds to static and noise.
