The iPhone Crosses the Pond, Works With O2

On November 9th the iPhone coming to the U.K. and Apple is working with the carrier O2. The phone will cost cost £269 (In a jab to US customers at the press event Steve made sure to say that translated to $535) and be available from Apple Retail stores and the popular cellular reseller Carphone Warehouse.
There will only be a 8GB model, and only EDGE connectivity – which is shocking to me. Contracts will be £35, £45 or £55 a month and include unlimited (within fair-use) WiFi at The Cloud hotspots and EDGE & GPRS on O2.
What do you guys think?

I think we’ll be seeing price cuts shortly after launch. I don’t know anyone who is paying more then £25 a month for mobile access, so £35 will be out of the question for a vast majority, let alone £55 a month. And of those paying monthly, almost all of them got their mobiles for free or for £30 or so. I was considering getting an iPhone, but at these prices, forget it.
with a contract that cost £20 a month you normally get at least a £200 phone free. Why would anyone but the blind fanboys pay £270 and then £35 a month for a phone.
The iphone is nothing special anyway. My sony ericsson with opera mini is basically the same, only it doesnt have a touch screen.
When the iphone was announced in the US i was fairly impressed, but as time goes on it just get more and more… meh…
And the whole EDGE thing is hilarious.
I got an HTC Hermes for £50 with my contract, and I’d much rather be using it than an iPhone.
Another interesting thing is Carphone Warehouse, in general, doesn’t sell locked phones on principle. I guess they’re going to compromise those principles in this case.
“only it doesnt have a touch screen” – I think thats a pretty big difference right there. Not to mention theiPod interface, which most everyone would agree is the best music player UI available.
Its amazing how polarizing apple is…everyone loves them or loves ripping on them. Come out with a phone? Too expensive. Drop the price? You screwed the people who paid too much. Come out with a phone in the US? What about the rest of the world. Offer the phone in the UK? Its too expensive again.
I never want to hear “too expensive” again. Price is relative…to me, the price I am paying for unlimited data and the convenience of not having to carry multiple devices with me each time i leave the house, is more than worth the cost.
I’m on PAYG and never spend more than 10GBP a month on my phone, so it’s not economical for me to pay £35 a month!
@MARK H
I dunno. If I already have all the other things that the iphone does, I wouldn’t want to pay the extra rediculous price if there are other things that do the exact same thing that cost WAAAAAY less.
And touch screen is so over rated.
@LISA
I think you meant to say that to Marc (too many Mark/cs!). Also I agree with you.
@Marc
The too expensive responses coming from the UK are based on the fact that it’s WAY out of line with other phones/ppcs (and its not 3G!). For example, you can get the Prada Phone/N95 for free on a similar contract.
And, I just want to say that I love Mac. I love OS X. I love iPods. That doesn’t mean I can’t point out that the iPhone is a weak product. It’s an expensive gimmick.
you guys across the pond from us in the us are a funny bunch. I have the iPhone in USA and use Edge system which isn’t as bad as you make it to be. Waaaah. A bunch of cheap a$$es you all are. LOL
