The real Alien: Eel’s have second jaw

The Alien series is arguably one of the best sci-fi/horror franchises in film history, and although most of it relies on high-quality screenwriting and direction to be so good, it just wouldn’t be the same without the obsessively scary Alien creatures. Blood for acid, oozing snot from every pore, these are truly the stuff of nightmares. But perhaps the most awesomely terrifying aspect of these extraterrestrials is their second set of jaws.
Scientists at UC Davis have discovered an almost exact replica of this fanciful characteristic in certain species of Morey eels. While unable to extend farther than a few inches inside the mouth, the second jaw greatly aids the animal in keeping hold of struggling prey and dragging it deeper into its gullet. [via]
In the “Snake Researcher” episode of Discovery Channel’ “Dirty Jobs”, they show how bloodworms in Maine(?) have a retractable mouth with four fangs and the bite is comparable to a bee sting. I instantly thought of the Alien movies.
Oh that’s just gross… and yet at the same time, so, so sexy.
