Easily Create Custom Ringtones With iTunes 7.4

Posted in Apple by Dan at 11:48 am

So, the world again is pissed at Apple for making it impossible to add custom ringtones and jailbreak your iPhone with the latest version of iTunes.

To fight back, friend of the site Erica Sadun has found a stupidly simple method to legitimately use iTunes 7.4 to create iPhone compatible ring tones for free.

It goes basically like this: iTunes uses the m4r file extension for Ringtones. If you remove an AAC file from your library and rename it from .m4a to .m4r and then add it back to iTunes, the program reads it back in as a ringtone rather than a normal library track. You can then sync it to your iPhone. I’ve tested this with both an MP3 that I converted to AAC and with a track I purchased from the iTunes store. They both worked.

She points out that the best method to rename the file on a Mac is to use the “Get Info” window to make sure the new file extension sticks. Simply brilliant.

    um…question.

if you do that with a song you purchased from the iTMS, does it remove the DRM? Can you go on and convert the m4r to… m4a or mp3?

Question. I have 7.5 (19) and I’ve tried converting any mp3s to m4r’s and then tried either importing or opening the m4r’s in iTunes, and it won’t open them up (when I try to create MY OWN ringtones). Can you help me with this ish??? Please?

    Thank you :-)
