Sound off! The Apple Event

Posted in Apple by Dan at 5:10 pm

So what do you think about the announcements at the Apple event? You pissed about the iPhone price drop? Think the nanos are too fat? Don’t really understand the point of the iPod touch. Angry about the ringtone selection?

Sound off in the comments!

The 160 seems pretty awesome. Why it’s not a touch interface baffles.

  2. Brandon says:

I didnt understand the Touch until my friend got really happy about it and described several situations where it would be “kick-ass.” Leaning towards the Classic 160gig though, FINALLY I can fit all my songs ;)

  3. Guillermo says:

I’m very disappointed by Steve’s comment that “this is a worldwide product, the first touch product Apple’s going to ship outside the US, it’s going to be shipping all around the world”, which is a blatant lie.

I guess I’ll have to wait until they’re available at Amazon, since they seem to have no problem accepting my international credit card.

  4. Michael Curtis says:

Some of us are pissed off about the fact that the iPhone still isn’t onsale in the U.K. I mean, not only do we over here get completely ripped off for this kind of thing even when it is sold, we have to wait several months for the privelage!

I’m only annoyed with Apple because I actually want to buy their products. Unfortunately though, it isn’t just them…

  5. David says:

I think the price drop on the iPhone was a bit early and a bit steep. I know there is a price to being an early adopter but this price is too high IMO. I doubt if I will buy any more Apple products early though I am extremely pleased with my iPhone – recent price drop notwithstanding.

  6. Nigel says:

I want the iPod touch, but whats the go with 8-16GB?? I was expecting at least 32!!

And it looks like that poorly shopped nano pic was on the right track

  7. Adam Jackson says:

Sigh. I bought an 8gb iPhone. Life Sux. Apple can die.

  8. Tensenki says:

I think this sends a great message, you can be first, but it will cost you. Suckers… ;) I’m just an ass because I can’t get one in Canada so I’d be glad to fork over an extra couple bills. :P

  9. Justin says:

The nanos look like the mockups people have been making…kinda disappointing a little.

  10. WEBSNAP says:

I was literally ready to enter in my card info to buy an iPod Touch with 80 gig and above to replace my 5 Gen 60 gig which is now full. Instead, I have to choose a 160 iPod with out a real “wow” factor, or a iPod touch that would make me significantly pair down my available music. Needless to say, I had to put my card away.

  11. Shauna says:

    David,

This is a perfect time for them to drop the price of the Iphone… They just sold close to 1 million already so everyone knows and loves them now plus they got so airtime when this phone came out… See now the clone wars have began with every phone being a Iphone knock off since creativity is something the market has *laughts to self*. Now the clones are going to be a lower price. Apple lowers the price and now it is extremely competive with clones… So which phone do you pick? The competor with something you dont know but looks familiar to the Iphone or get the real deal for the same price or just a little bit more… plus now it is 8 gigs.. It seems to me like good business.

Also you got to love the 3G hint

If someone got an App on the Ipod Touch to do text messaging then this thing would be my life line.. have an App that connects to a server and send txt messages using your WiFi connection… No more need for a phone.. Most of my calls are just text messages.. I just talk on phone if need to do something long…

I wish the Ipod Touch had a bigger hard drive in it…

  12. Ed says:

Received my Refurb 8GB Iphone last Wednesday. Called Apple today (very calmly!) and asked what are my options. The service guy said sure, we are matching the price. Said I should have my refund to my credit card shortly. Frankly, I was not expecting anything and I am very surprised. Waited 17 minutes on hold, took about 2 minutes total. I think if it is under 14 days, that are giving refunds. Had 2 other friends do the same thing.

  13. R031E5 says:

*sigh* I bought a 4 gb iPhone for 499, now the 8 gig version is 399, yeah, life sucks

  14. Ben Seven says:

Ipod Shuffles – who cares about the colours? With the exception of the Product Red one, which is for a good enough cause…

Ipod Nano – it really hurts my eyes. There’s just something about it that looks nasty – like someone’s fat kid brother.

Ipod classic – good to see the larger hard drives, and the metal casing probably makes them a fraction more hard-wearing. But it’s still a fairly bog standard ‘pod.

    Ipod touch –
I like this a lot – but I too was bitterly disappointed that a larger HD wasn’t sported. I’ll bet a product refresh for this line would consist of a larger hard drive option and potentially bluetooth for wireless headphones – typical apple routine of developing a fantastic product, but keeping a couple of things lacking only to later bring out a successor that does what you need it to.

hence the reason I’m waiting for the second generation iPhone that will hopefully sport more storage space – not because I have a massive music collection, but because I value portable storage space…

    Iphone price drop.

I can understand folks being a little pissed off, but seriously. It’s a good thing for the user base in general. Fair enough if you’d just bought one and could have saved $200 – but get over it, ‘Apple can die’?! It’s still a great and revolutionary product, regardless of whether you were dumb enough to buy it as soon as it was out… The price of early adoption…

  15. Andre says:

More storage on the touch pod would make it really nice… or at least some few apps, like iChat, for example.
Expect front and back cameras and such features next year on the pod touch :p. Not buying anything now… because next week Apple might discontinue the 8 gig line and sell the 16 gig for 299.
    Ha,

  16. Jed says:

Would have bought the touch except for the pathetic storage. Went for a classic 160 GB instead. Maybe that will hold me over for the next few years until storage goes up on the touch. I’ve been waiting for 2 years to replace my old 20 GB ipod because of rumors of a touch in the works but now… meh… I guess I still have to wait.

  17. Don Wilson says:

$100 for twice the iPhone space of mine…

    Awesome.

  18. Masta' B says:

I already bought a 160GB iPod Classic…It’s exactly what I was waiting for.

I’m pretty happy with my iPhone, but I’m also pissed about the price drop…mostly because I didn’t use it at all during the summer because I live in a rural area…and I bought it to use during school in the city…so no sooner do I get here…they’re $399. Balls.

I personally think the iPhone’s iPod interface sucks, so I pity those who buy the iPod touch…unless they’re buying it for a web browser or something…and 8/16GB?? you might as well just buy an iPhone…

  19. chad seaman says:

    boo on all fronts!!!

From now on I will refer to him as $teve Job$

Good news for late early adopters however a buddy if mine got the iPhone last weekend, he went to the apple store today and complained and they gave him a $216 refund on the difference.

  20. Matt says:

Apple’s design is lacking. I’m not a fanboy, by far, and I mean that without bias, as much as possible of course. If they had lowered shuffle’s pricing to 50 or so bucks, I’d pick one up, throw some bands discography on it and do whatever, ’cause it’s something simple, and doesn’t look like shit that Apple’s done recently.

    Bash away.

  21. yea, the touch is sweet and all…mainly because of the wifi and safari…but it just doesn’t have the storage space i need….

that’s why im going to get the 160…thats a crazy amount of space. i like that a lot. i can put my entire music library on there….

the “fatties” really bother me…i mean they just took the ipod and made it shorter…i am an industrial design student, and in the design world…that’s a no-no…i mean the ipod was already based on Avogadro’s number, and the design works well…i personally don’t think nano users need video…but that’s just me…

i just can’t wait to see what the hacking community does with the touch…

    -lM ll lL lL S

  22. Andre says:

Yeah, can’t wait to see the hacks too :D
But I just don’t have any idea of what to expect on the next release of future iPods.
I mean… we quite have everything. Except preparing coffes and doing homeworks, iPods do everything nowadays 0.0 . From notes to wifi.

  23. Anthony says:

Most def waiting until the touch reached AT LEAST 40 GB before I invest in one.

  24. JasonBlogs says:

I’ve wanted wifi on a device like the iPod for a long time. Unfortunately there has been no mention of bluetooth. It would be great to have wifi and a bluetooth headset. I also don’t like the new beveled/rounded look of the iPod nano. I like my current one. And why does it have to be smaller? I’m a big guy with big hands. But the iPod classic is a little too bulky for me.

  25. Ross says:

The iPod touch could be a good sign for iPhone owners. Mabey now Apple will roll out games for both products so we can play when we’re not connected to the Internet.

  26. fernyb says:

I will buy another ipod to my collection…. and about the price drop in the iphone meh, I got an 8GB for $375… call it connections…

  27. Jake says:

I also bought an 8GB iPhone, $200 off for just 2-3 months? I not going to buy any apple product for 2 years. It just sucks, when they do that.

  28. Chris says:

    Where is the new iTunes?

  29. Martin says:

*** What i want to know is can I do a firmware upgrade from my generation 5.5 80GB iPod to the new generation 6 UI..?

*** Has no-one asked this question yet????

    — disappointed with the announcement 16GB just isn’t enough for a device that is pushing fantastic video attributes.

  30. Jambamkin says:

Surely there is no 32GB Touch because the future is flash based and a 32GB flash drive would make it unaffordable.
But Wifi! Just Wow, It won’t be hard I’m sure for those that have hacked the iPhone to apply it to the touch. The possibilties are endless.

On the Criticism side, Who cares about the Starbucks thing? It’s only going to be rolled out to 4 stores in the next year? Wow get me a ticket to america(!) Why make such a big hoo har?

Maybe because they want other companies to see it and take the idea?

  31. Chris says:

    @Martin

That is why I am wanted the iTunes Upgrade (and couldn’t sleep). After a restart, the answer is no. 1.2.1 is the current version.

  32. Jerry says:

    Apple had an event? Huh.
Still rocking my Motorola V180 phone, and no MP3 player, but if I do it’ll be a $75 one.
Enjoy your $600 phones. …and DRM on your iPod.

  33. What are alternatives to iPhone? WiFi at least?
    Nokia N95?? Others?
    No many alternatives..

  34. PJ says:

You know, I don’t really mind the new nano look.. Sure it throws away the golden ratio, but it doesn’t look that bad… And since it’s quite cheap and we have an apple store on campus, I might as well pick one up to replace the hideous 1st gen iPod Shuffle I have. I’m quite sick of it :P

    …There’s a new iTunes out…

  35. Chris says:

I’m thinking if I was buying the touch I would just get the phone for Bluetooth and future hacks. I didn’t mention mail application as no doubt it will be “brought” over to the touch.

  36. Derek says:

I don’t get the ringtone thing. I can pay a buck to chunk a 30 second clip out of a song I already paid a buck for? And this is cool?

I can’t believe people pay for ringtones.

  37. Ross says:

Steve job letter to iphone users was a great PR move and will stop many complaints. Giving 100 dollars to all pre-price drop iphone owners for the apple store although not as good as cash might as well be since early adapters were largely apple fantics. As an iPhone owner I feel that apple has treated me right. Thanks Steve!

  38. Rager says:

    @Martin

You can never apply the new UI to the old iPods. Apple doesn’t do that. The 5.5g search isn’t even hackable onto the 5g, much less installable from iTunes.

    @Jambamkin

It’s not a simple process to hack the iPods, since Apple started encrypting firmwares after the Nano 2g. There are many, many, many, many reasons why it’s nowhere near as easy as you think to hack these things or anything after them. People have been at work at the Nano 2g since the things came out and are hardly any further than they were when they started.

If it was easy, people would have hacked stuff like the Zune a long time ago (I know you guys hate the things, but built in WiFi was reason enough to get people onboard to try to crack them).

  39. Jed says:

I agree that the starbucks thing is pretty much useless unless you live on one of those 4 cities… However, it may just be Apple testing the waters so to speak. If it works into a substantial increase in revenue they could start partnering up with other chains as well.

The new nano design doesn’t bother me. I like it better than the old one.

Also, I wish the iPod touch could sync of wifi.
