TorrentSpy Says Bye Bye To The US

If you enjoy torrenting you have heard of TorrentSpy, but if you reside in the US you now unbookmark that site. Starting today the ultra popular torrent tracker has blocked all US IP addresses.

Sorry, but because you are located in the USA you cannot use the search features of the Torrentspy.com website.Torrentspy’s decision to stop accepting US visitors was NOT compelled by any Court but rather an uncertain legal climate in the US regarding user privacy and an apparent tension between US and European Union privacy laws.

Hmmm. Was this a move to protect themselves from being sued into oblivion or a way to protect other worldwide users of the service from being scrutinized in server logs? [via]

Server logs are def. the issue here. I remember reading something about this on /. a few weeks back that they would be actively monitoring the logs due to a legal request or something.

    TorrentSpy… you will be missed… :(

Looks like I’m going to have to find a good russian proxy ;)

I never really liked torrentspy…aside from the logs and stuff, their persistent raunchy ads threw me off :P

well, I was never a fan of torrentspy either.. but I;m pretty sure the easiest way around this issue is a sweet little app call Democrakey.. It’s free and it uses Torr. So you surf anonously.. and for the most part you get IP addresses from outside the us anyways…
Might not work but hey its still a great little app, gets around my offices web filter and tracker!!! Sweet!

what’s this world come to? we have to jump through more hoops to get our “stuff”? :)

    usenet ftmfw!

  5. Nate Whistler says:

Just use a public proxy. If you search you can find http proxies that lie in foreign countries and jump through them to get to where you need to go.

  6. Chad, do let me know when you find that Russian proxy of yours :)
