The Legal Side of Unlocking

Yes, a certain phone owned by a company named after a fruit was unlocked today and from the emails in my box people thought that the unlocker would get sued into oblivion.

Unlocking, now more then ever is a LEGAL non infringing way to free your phone. There is no US law against unlocking cell phones and last year, the Library of Congress made the step to exclude cell-phone unlocking as a punishable offense from under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

So will the un-locker get sued? Probably, thats the way apple conducts business but the case will be on shaky ground unless there was confidential propriety information directly leaked or stolen from Apple to do this unlocking.

Hack on!

It will be made available in 48 hours… It can be unlocked via software and we will be granted 4 unlock keys that we are giving away.

from what i read it’s not an easy task to unlock (yet). both hardware and software. i think i’ll wait for a purely software method. ;)
