Asus has decided it is going to enter the ultra low cost PC market by offering a $199 to the public. The laptop will have:

7″ LCD Display (800×480)
900MHz Celeron-M ULV (Ultra Low Voltage) 353
Intel 910 Chipset
512MB DDR2-400 RAM
4, 8, or 16GB solid-state storage
Dimensions: 225 x 165 x 21-35mm
Weight: Approximately 2 lbs
Colors: Available in black or white
OS: Xandros-based Linux OS

This certainly is no powerhouse but might actually be worth thinking about for bloggers on the go who need a real computer with a real web browser to accomplish their work on the go.

I’ve been reading about this all week. It’s the EeePC I believe… http://event.asus.com/eeepc/

Perfect to show off my digital pix at a photo shoot!

Actually, it’s now being reported that there will be several models, ranging in price from $199 – $369, and that while the $199 PC will be shipped in developing nations, we might not see anything quite so cheap in the US. The low end unit will have a 2 cell battery, 2GB HDD and 256MB of RAM, while the higher priced units will have a 4 cell battery, more RAM and larger hard drives. But at $350, you’re getting dangerously close to the price of a full fledged laptop, making the EEE PC a bit less attractive.

Are these “computers” marketed towards the pre-school crowd?

And what developing nation citizen can afford $199 for a laptop. A lot of people don’t even make $199 a year in many countries. Call me silly, but I think clean water, food, and shelter should be the priorities in these countries. I mean I get what the computers can help people do, but when basic needs are not being met, it’s just pointless imho.

Could be ok for a jr high & high crowed here in the us. If work it down to 100 bucks and you can up grade Ram & HD as needed.
