My Tech: Evan’s Tale of Mediocrity
When Dan asked me to do this I had to admit I was a bit nervous, I don’t really have a lot of the fancy stuff they have, sorry to say. I’d probably be better off talking about the stuff I plan on getting as I prepare to enter University. I’m actually a big fan of web applications in place of desktop apps and I’m trying to find a good balance. Seems I’m the only Windoes guy working on the site but without further adieu, here goes nothing.
Hardware
Dell Inspiron 5150
Need To Choose Between Getting
Dell Inspiron 1420 or Macbook (haven’t touched a Mac since we had one of the old black and white ones)
For My Tunes
30GB iPod
For My Gaming
Playstation 2 – PS3 coming soon!
For My Communication
2 Cell Phones (Different Networks) too crappy to mention
On The Hard Drive
µTorrent
MSN Messenger
Firefox
Gtalk
Pownce Desktop Client
Windows Live Writer
Web Apps
Meebo
Google Reader
I currently need to decide on a laptop and a phone. I’m thinking the Nokia 5300 and the Dell 1420. If you have suggestions, let me know in the comments! The prices of these items gives you an idea of the budget I have in mind.

We pity you evan. Yea, that doesn’t come close to Dan an Derek’s setups.
It’s okay though. We all start somewhere.
Wow Evan…did they even give you a desk or did they give you a TV tray and put you down in the basement with Milton??
It’s okay. People are spoiled now a days with multiple computers… Ol’ Bessy is better than this new zigahertz stuff, as long as you’re happy with it.
Hey we are professional geeks. Evan is a writer :)
Does it make it any better considering I am 18?
Adam – That’s all I ask.
Ian – I know, right?
Rob D – All I get is pudding…
Justin – Agreed.
Dan – Yeah!
@ rob LOL that’s funny… made me giggle, but seriously… do we NEED much more? nah, we got along without 3 computers, 2 cell phones, and whatever other gadgets years ago… More power to ya Evan!
My Google Reader is all the clutter I need haha
@Evan
I will admit I am a technology whore… let it be known I didn’t own a computer (or even have one in my house) until I was a Junior in High School (2001). The computer made it till I graduated said High School (2002) and used all of my “Congrats/Graduation” money to buy a Sony Vaio (now my 2Ghz server). And that computer made it all the way through College (2005ish).
However after landing a few good paying gigs since then my technology life has gotten very…. slutty (for lack of a better word).
/me suggests going with an Asus
Why? They’re a primary manufacturer, and their own-brand computers tend to be pretty nice for the price. I’m holding out on buying a laptop to see what the Asus F8s will be like when the computer finally comes out, as the specs haven’t even been officially released yet. The build quality on Asus’ own-brand laptops and stuff seems to be good, and they do the manufacturing for Apple and HP, among others. Anyway, check it out.
Besides that, I see no problem with your tech stockpiles. It’s how you use them, anyway.
Haha, awwww, thanks guys!
Alan – I think right now my options are only Dell and HP, due to my geographical situation.
Haha Evan if I was you I woulda turned this post into a spoof of the other guys with all the shiny gadgets and named a bunch of outdated or completely useless products that never became popular. That woulda been hilarious!
@MYKE
(misc hardware)
13 Furbys
Sega CD (mint)
VTech Learning Station
Rotary Dial Snoopy Telephone (also mint)
(misc software I use daily)
Bonzai Buddy
Myke – That would have great, had I thought of it I definitely would have done it. AHAHA!
Bahaha! Bonzia Buddy!
Evan: try newegg. They deliver, often for free on many purchases. Once you know, you newegg. It’ll open up your options.
For your cellphone i suggest looking to the HTC S710. Its a candy-bar/slider smartphone. it runs Windows Mobile 6.0, and is a GSM phone. Its pretty nice though. It gets aprox. 8 hours talk time. And to my suprise gets better ratings then the Verizon EnV.
Anyways… you can pick there up online for as low as about $250.
