Sun Sets on SunRocket VOIP Service

Just after a round of layoffs it seems that VOIP provider SunRocket couldn’t save the sinking ship.

SunRocket, an Internet telephone company, has ceased operations and is moving its customers to one or more other companies, according to a person briefed on its status. [...] In April, SunRocket announced that it had reached 200,000 subscribers and said the milestone was a testament to consumers’ embrace of Internet telephony, which allows telephone calls to be transmitted as data over the Internet. One of SunRocket’s main pitches to potential customers was its offer of $199 for a year of unlimited calling to the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.

Calls to the customer service number yielded a warm and friendly greeting that SunRocket is no longer taking customer service or sales calls, and abruptly hangs up.

I don’t there is a pulse there.

    I switched to sunrocket last october and sure enough my line is dead. This is total crap. They could at least have given us a warning so I could have planned to have another carrier put in place. DishNetwork is going to start charging me $5 a month until I can get another carrier.

    Sorry they left you hanging like that. I’ve been really happy with Voicepulse since my switch from Vonage. The Broadband Reports forums have lots of Voip provider reviews if you want to find one that suits your needs…

    also, saw this post on porting SR numbers. thought it might help you:

    “In case you want to port over, an ex SR sys. Tech says it still can be done. From What I read on him, he was pretty high up the chain in IT…Or maybe its just my interpretation of what he says…

    Anyways, since this is really important to those of us that were former SR customers, I’m copying the comments here as well as providing the URL. Here the text:

    Sunrocket done at COB today
    I also got copied on the internal memo stating that they had not found a buyer. More than anything though, it seems pretty clear that people don’t quite understand how the porting system works. The last dev remaining sent an IM my way saying that he was turning out the lights. If I had been in town I’d be pulling gear out of the lab right now, they had some really nice kit in there.

    Porting a number is “pull” process most of the time. This means that there need not be anyone alive on the other end to release the number. The only system that will still see the number at its original location is the system that you have ported from. In SR’s case, they’ll be “bricking” or killing their ATA’s today sometime, so this won’t be a problem. Secondly, SunRocket never bothered going through the registration to get its own numbers for a number of reasons (good for everyone, as it turns out), so proof of number ownership lies with the upstream number providers anyways: Global Crossing, Qwest, Broadwing.

    How to Port:

    IMPORTANT: Print out a SunRocket statement from the web site!

    Open an account with your chosen provider, and tell them you’d like to port the number.

    Send them a copy of the printed statement (not that it says much).

    Once inbound calls start working on your new equipment, call SunRocket to cancel your account. Skip that step – they’re no longer answering.”

    Man it sucks big time – 3 months after I signed up for another full year – roughly $140 out the door…

    My biggest concern is snagging my home phone number back – apparently since they ceased operations – I can’t have the number ported over to another VOIP provider or Verizon for that matter… Any suggestions or am I looking at a new phone number???

    I’d be disputing the charge with my credit card company. I’ve been with Lingo for 2+ years and can’t complain.
