Feeling lost in a crowd with my generic looking iPhone I cautiously decided it was time to void the warranty. I reached out to Phillip Torrone, one of the minds behind ADAFruit, to have my expensive toy phone go under the laser beam and get a little tramp stamp tattoo.

Pictured above is the end result, of what we think is the first engraved iPhone. Isn’t it adorable?

If you are in NYC and feeling adventurous drop Phillip and the gang an line at laser@adafruit.com or via their website. Typical small device etching costs $30, while larger items cost $100. Tell them that Dan sent you.

(Also did you know the back of the iPhone is PLASTIC?! Hard to believe, right?)

UPDATE: Props to Phillip for posting the video.

  2. Alan Rager says:

Those laser etching machines are not so cheap, man, so they have to charge to recover costs before they even make money on it.

  3. Dan says:

$30 is a deal if you look at the options out there. Honestly it is worth it to work with the folks over at Adafruit

Device Nine Six does the same thing in Los Angeles Area,

$30 for Ipod, $50 for the MacbookPro

@bop: in addition to your pitiful grasp of the English language, and your childlike sense of grammar and spelling, you also don’t have the mental capacity to comprehend that concepts and inanimate objects have no sexuality. Said in a way you may be able to understand: u aint on dis planet 4 ur brainz and u is losr.

Plastic ? I thought it was ceramic, a “radio-transparent” material. The back of the iPhone feels very resistant for plastic so I’m not sure…

  7. Eleventeen says:

It’s possible that it’s aluminized plastic like some parts of the the Macbook Pros and Powerbooks.

  8. Dave Zatz says:

Good thing you didn’t put your name on there… you can still ebay it. ;) Nice use of scotch tape.

I want toasters on [my] ipod!

Wow, now isn’t that the coolest thing ever? Nice job Dan, If I get something really expensive and feel the need to void its warranty, I’ll remember this post and send or bring it to Adafruit.

    @Bop – Go blow goats.

Awesome, I’d love to personalize my tech without the use of stickers.
