iPhoneify: Optimize Your WordPress Blog for The iPhone
This post was published 2 years 6 months 27 days ago which may make its actuality or expire date not be valid anymore. This site is not responsible for any misunderstanding.
Lets face it, browsing the internet at EDGE speeds is not the fastest experience. So, the burden is on the content provider to slim things down a bit and make their website more usable on mobile devices. Thats why we launched UNEASY.mobi about a year ago. The iPhone however throws a wrench into the process. The end user is left with what is quite possibly the most functional web browser to ever grace a mobile phone, but really can’t enjoy it on the cellphones data connection. Here is where iWPhone steps in.
iWPhone is a WordPress Plugin and Theme that automatically reformats your blog’s content for optimized viewing on Apple’s iPhone. Without modifying your main theme, the plugin detects the iPhone’s User Agent and serves up the content with the special theme only to iPhone visitors and all other browsers will view your WordPress blog with your current theme.
All you need to do is download the iWPhone WordPress Plugin and Theme zip file, extract the “iwphone-wordpress-plugin-and-theme” folder on your computer and upload the iwphone.php file to your wp-content/plugins/ directory. You will also need to copy the iwphone-by-contentrobot folder into your wp-content/themes/ directory and activate the plugin called iWPhone.
Its plugin is really a great tool to cut the load times of your blog on iPhones, but it is not without problems. There is no clickable link or button that allows site visitors to switch between iPhone theme and normal site theme and there is no search functionality, but I’m sure those features will be added shortly in a future release.
(FYI, we have been running this plugin for about a day now and nothing NO problem on the client or server end)
thats pretty cool. i wish i knew how to do wordpress blogs and what not for my site, in any case, i get around 30Kbps on edge in SF bay area, its snappy enough since if im on it, my attention is usually on the phone and somewhere else so i dont even realize im waiting for something to load anyways. its usually loaded by the time i remember i wanted to look at something.
thanks for this!
yet another reason why I need to switch to wordpress
