New Pill that Helps Stop Smoking, May Help Stopping Drinking

A single pill appears to hold promise in curbing the urges to both smoke and drink, according to researchers trying to help people overcome addiction by targeting a pleasure center in the brain.
The drug, called varenicline, already is sold to help smokers kick the habit. New but preliminary research suggests it could gain a second use in helping heavy drinkers quit, too.
Much further down the line, the tablets might be considered as a treatment for addictions to everything from gambling to painkillers, researchers said.
Wait, gambling too?! THIS PILL MUST BE STOPPED! Ok, on a serious note, its great to see some medial technology help people overcome some serious addictions.
If it’s going to “tinker” with the pleasure centre of the brain, isn’t it possible that other pleasure triggers may come miss aligned? You no longer enjoy chocolate, or you may not find pleasure in general activities you once did. I can see the possibility of a rise in depression due to this. I think in situations like this we need to focus as much on the side effects as we do on the target effect. No side effects were mentioned in this article which I find hard to believe, since even aspirin had them.
I should start dropping one of these into my father’s nightcaps. :O
