This Independence Day, DVD Jon Frees Your iPhone

We promise to to keep the fawning to a minimum, but this was certainly blog worthy. DVD Jon, who was responsible for cracking the DVD DRM, has engineered a way to activate your iPhone without buying a cellular plan. Mind you, The iPhone will not have phone capability, but the iPod and WiFi will work.
You’ll need to download the Phone Activation Server v1.0 application from Jon’s website. He noted that this application will not do anything unless you understand certain magic numbers as well as add entries in your computers hosts file.
Dan, please bring more of this iPhone goodness. I’m hoping someone learns how to load apps, to it.

I gave it 2 months before hackers get their hands and guides up and running on this lil guy… looks like I may have over shot with the timeline estimate. Fingers crossed for writing custom apps in xcode by September :D
My curiosity is more centered around the update system and their control over the phone via that system. Think about it, you unlock and load your phone with stuff, takes like 2 hours to get working correctly, apple releases software update… then you have to hope they didn’t patch it and also spend 2 hours getting it setup again?… or what if they just start deactivating “compromised” handsets. Things could get ugly.
