The notebook will run a custom written Linux operating system with an interface which looks similar to Windows.
Asus chairman Jonney Shih sprang a surprise during Intel’s Computex keynote today with the announcement of a $189 laptop. The notebook measures roughly 120 x 100 x 30mm (WDH) and weighs only 900g. We saw the notebook boot in 15 seconds from its solid-state hard disk. The huge auditorium then burst into applause as Shih revealed the astounding price tag. Dubbed the 3ePC, Shih claimed the notebook is the ‘lowest cost and easiest PC to use’. As the crowds rushed the stage, we sneaked off to the Asus stand to take a closer look.
For $189, you have to begin to question the build-quality. Right? Is there ever a price point [in your eyes] when too cheap translates into a disposable "temporary" computer – rather than something that you foresee yourself using for extended periods of time (read one to two years).
seems like a no brainer to me. id buy one in a heartbeat. i spend nearly twice that on nothing a month :/
At that price (in Euros it’s even cheaper ^^) I guess that I would buy 2 or 3 of them, one staying in my car, one in my bathroom and one in my coat/jacket/pocket. Let’s pray the IT gods that it makes it to the stores without any change.
Cool. I’ve always seen cool and innovative types of stuff out of Asus.
this would be GREAT for giving as a gift to a younger cousin, or possibly nephew or niece. Let them learn how to use a computer, teach them some low level linux and such.
When this hits the market I’ll probably by 3 or 4 around christmas to give to some of the younger kids in my family.
I love it
If it lets me show my pix to people, and surf the web, I’m in…
For those of us that like to dabble in nix but could never convert… Yea, I’ll buy a couple.
