Actually Maine is a province from France, located in the west of France and named after a river that flows over there. Maine, the name of that river, comes from the old french 'Maienne' which means something like: 'an average size river' or a 'river in the middle'. So that sounds to me like the real origin of that state's name. Interesting, but being French I don’t think that ‘maine’ is an old french word meaning ‘province’.
