Honestly, I think Apple can pull it off nicely if they set the right price points. The "low-end" iPhone will of course cost $499, which currently is $150 more than the high-end iPod. If they came out with a widescreen multitouch iPod, I can foresee a higher price of $399, but maintain the same capacity (or even reduce it for favor of solid state). With a price difference now of only $100, I imagine people will be torn with the dilemma of paying less for a single-feature iPod, or more for a multi-feature communicator. Think of it as the movie-theater popcorn problem: you're still paying a $5.00 for a thing of popcorn, but for only $0.25 more you can get oh so much more.

Its not a matter of cannibalising their sales, its about the detrimental effect it would have on the iPhones Wow factor. (as much as I hate to use that term...)

Apple (and commenters) have built up the features of the iphone so much, to Apples benifit, that if an ipod were to arrive at the same time with most of the same features then Wow factor of the iphone would be reduced. They want everyones attention on the iPhone (no distracting iPods). Apple knows that the iphone could sell billions and its not worth forsaking that for anything
