Vegans kill newborn child

I can respect the decision of adults choosing to adhere to a veggie diet, but don’t force newborn / young children to follow. There’s a reason why newborn children require a well balanced diet. I newborn child can not survive on water – essentially the equivalent of what these parents limited their newborn to.
A vegan couple have been sentenced to life in prison by a US court over the death of their malnourished baby.
The baby died six weeks after birth after being fed a diet largely made up of soy milk and organic apple juice.
Defence lawyers for Lamont Thomas and Jade Sanders said they had starved their child unintentionally by adhering to a strictly vegan diet.
But prosecutors in the US city of Atlanta said the couple had deliberately neglected their child.
“No matter how many times they want to say, ‘We’re vegans, we’re vegetarians,’ that’s not the issue in this case,” Prosecutor Chuck Boring is quoted by the Associated Press news agency as saying.
“The child died because he was not fed. Period,” he said.
This is why meat is a natural / valuable part of our daily diet. Does anyone care to stand up for either sides of the debate? Hat tip to Eston.

what these people did is horrible…
people are ment ot eat meat…
but i dont think they should get tossed in jail thats just wrong.. im sure they will suffer enough with the loss of there child … life in prison is a slap in the face after the persons allready knocked out
this story was brought up in my history class about a week ago. I say that they just weren’t feeding the kid any where near enough. when my sister was born, she was lactos intollorant, so she lived off soymilk. there is no way that they could have been feeding the baby, even on a vegan diet. i say that they where just trying to use that as an excuse :/
The fact that they were vegans is completely irrelevant. If they’d fed that baby meat, it probably would’ve died even quicker!
All babies eat at that stage is breastmilk, so the fact that they wouldn’t feed it meat is not relevant to the story whatsoever.
Wait, isn’t breastmilk technically from an animal though? I guess that’s why they avoided it, Julian? I could be wrong. And wtf, doesn’t apple juice not happen until the kid’s like, three?
I think that being is okay & I’m thinking about it (only thing keeping from it is cost. no way in hell am I paying $2 for a quart of Silk when I can get a gallon of 2% for $3). But when you have BABY you should follow food guidlines & ask a pediatrician for the child’s diet help. When they’re old enough start feeding your diet or let them choose.
Breastmilk is Vegan-friendly, as long as it’s taken willingly, which a mother had better do for a child if they want to bring it up Vegan. The truth is that these parents were just negligent. Humans were not “meant” to eat meat any more than air is “meant” to be breathed. People at meat and air is breathed. I mean, the air wouldn’t be any worse off if it wasn’t breathed, and humans would be just fine without meat. Meat isn’t required in any way by the human body.
Truth be told, there is no reason why this child should have died if it was fed on a “Vegan” diet. These parents are just plain negligent and do not deserve to raise a child if they are going to make up excuses for killing their own child. If it were an option, sterilization would be better than prison for this couple. *update* The defense has changed positions and now blames the death on a birth defect in the form of an undersized thymus gland */update*
By the way, no, Derek, they did not feed this child the equivalent of water. It was uncooked grains and fruits as well as a few other things that weren’t just water.
Yeah, breast milk is SOOOO unatural, that’s why I only play with b00bies, not drink them ;P
Breastmilk should be the only food a baby should have up to 6 months old. Not even water is necessary since breastmilk have everything the baby needs

This is ridiculous. I am furious that UneasySilence would post this story this way. The fact that this couple is vegan has nothing to do with how they treat their baby. Maybe, from now on, for every person who is shot, we should find out what the shooter eats, so that headlines from now on read “Meat-Eater kills…” 99.99% of the time and “Vegan kills…” .01% of the time.
Actually being vegan does have something to do with it. In the article it said that the baby was only being fed soy milk and apple juice. I’m not entirely sure exactly what strict vegans don’t eat but wikipedia says that dairy products are restricted. Babies need breast milk or, at the very least, processed goat’s or cow’s milk to get all essential nutrients.

I fall in the BS crowd. Cause does not create correlation. Next time some mother kills her entire family, I’ll write in on how the meat or lack thereof was behind it.

The fact that they used their choice to be vegan/vegetarian as a defence means that it is an intrinsic part of the story. Uneasy Silence is not saying that all vegans maltreat children as you seem to imply. In this particular case a vegan couple forced a vegan diet on their baby and may or may not have fed it enough. As a result the baby died and they were rightly punished.
This is pretty crazy, but the vegan defense makes no sense. I am a vegetarian and have a couple vegan friends. The way the rule goes (especially for vegans) is that if an animal (in this case the mother) willfully gives of itself to them, than it is perfectly acceptable for them to eat. By using the “we’re vegans” defense, they are saying that the mother willfully decided to not give of herself to her newborn, which is completely preposterous
I am a vegan/vegetarian. My parents were. My mother was not able to breast feed me. So she gave me juices and soy milk. I was a healthy baby.
A huge amount of mothers do not breast feed. If you look at the products made today for baby’s who cant breast feed, you will find that most are made of soy milk and no dairy. So making this an issure about meat is absurd. There is no evidence any where that says babys have to have meat or dairy if they are not breast feed..
Obviously the parents underfed the child and didnt find a good vegan doctor to solve the problem. Many infants resist eating and need intraveinous nourishment. They probably were negligent ,not murderers.
We no longer live in a free country where the parents are allowed to raise their children as they wish and make mistakes.
Just you wait and see, next parents will be prosecuted for feeding their children too much junk food and cholestral. Hitler is alive and well in spirit in the USA.
I and my husband have raised TWO healthy vegan children. The issue here should be the stupidity of the parents…not the fact that they are vegans. There is too much information “out there” now on vegan diets as opposed to 20 years ago. No child should starve to death for any reason or belief. On the flip-side, there are lots of kids being OVER-fed too…and those parents should be prosecuted as well. A morbidly obese child with no signs of medical illness is suffering from child abuse and is being slowly killed. This has nothing to do with eating meat or not eating meat. It has to do with stupidity on the part of the parents.

Wow, I can’t believe the comment about the poster who could write a 10 page paper on this & that humans are meant to eat meat. Obviously, you haven’t done your research and you should, because then you’d realize how how false that statement is. As some of the previous posts have stated, vegan parents have successfully raised vegan babies & children – and some babies are lactose intolerant or the mother can’t breastfeed, meaning they can’t drink “normal” milk – does that mean that they aren’t getting proper nutrition because they have to use soy formula? I think not. The problem here was that the parents probably didn’t consult anyone on how to raise a vegan baby, because obviously a baby’s diet is different than an adult. Oh, and about the episode of House – the fact that the parents were vegan had nothing to do with the baby’s problems. They had already consulted a nutritionist and were providing their baby with proper nutrition – which is why House ruled that out as the cause (although it was his immediate assumption), the baby’s health problem was inherited or something to that effect.
