Protestors had improvised a sit-in until the water canon went into action. Every time the water canon was used, protestors starting shouting “le karcher, le karcher !” in reference to Sarkozy’s famous declaration about cleaning the scum of the suburbs with a karcher (the brand used as a generic name in French for a high pressure water washer).
