Widgets here, widgets there, widsets for your mobile phone. We covered Widsets very briefly back in June of 2006 without having the opportunity to really give the service a thorough run through. A few days back I revisited the service and soon realized my assumption that mobile phone widgets would be overkill or useless was all wrong. Don’t knock it unless you try it.

In order to get started with Widsets, you’ll need to register your free account at http://widsets.com. Think of your desktop computer browser based interface as the Dashboard for your Widsets experience. From here, you can manage your account, add / remove widgets that will appear on your handset, configure widgets, and monitor overall data usage. Note that in order to use Widsets, your handset will need to support Java MIDP 2.0. Most current up-to-date handset do so no worries. If you’re unsure, you can always try – it won’t hurt, and it’s free.

Once your account is activated and you’ve installed the engine on your phone, you’ll have an opportunity to preview the Dashboard Manager. From here, you can add widgets to your screen, arrange, or configure. I tested and used the service with a Nokia N95 and was amazed how seamless the desktop and mobile interface was. Add and arrange widgets through your standard browser, select Synchronize in the left column, and receive the update(s) or changes on your handset immediately.

Widsets Library

The Widsets library is loaded with widgets to choose from. Select as many or as few as you want from a collection including many of your favorite blogs / sites to a slew of productivity, travel, entertainment, and search tool widgets.

Widsets Studio

If your own site, or a favorite is not offered in the Widsets library, create it! Widsets offers an easy to learn Studio for creating, skinning, and promoting your own site. It took me all of about 2-minutes to create a basic UNEASYsilence Widsets widget which can be added here. I’ve spent a considerable amount of time experimenting with different widgets and configurations and am confident recommending the service to anyone with the supported hardware. Feel free to leave questions or concerns in the comments.
