Hot on the heals for the Nokia N95 launch which prompted protential customers to ask "why didn’t Nokia support US 3G networks", Nokia and Cingular launch the N75 – a Nokia flip phone. News comes by way of Boy Genius and I for one am very excited that Cingular is rolling out handsets which will allow US customers to make full use of their networks.

  • 2 MP camera with up to 10x zoom & video
  • Streaming music and video capabilities
  • High speed data access over UMTS network
  • Bluetooth® wireless technology
  • Integrated video recorder with 8x zoom
  • Quad-band world phone with fast domestic UMTS
  • Instant messaging – AOL®, Yahoo!®, & MSN®
  • Dual speakers for 3D surround sound

I want it for a backup phone. Is anyone looking forward to a bigger, brighter, and faster future for US 3G networks?

The N75 certainly has an excellent feature set that makes it ideal for a traveling power user. However, I have to say I’m a bit disappointed with the industrial design which is rather uninspiring and plain. In the wake of the iPhone, I hope mobile phone makers wise up to making their phones as beautiful on the inside as they are on the outside.

Industrial design, not just features, make products a joy to use. I look forward to a time when all these companies recognize its not just the bullet-point feature lists or advertising that makes a product. It’s the little things.

I wouldn’t just call the design plain and uninspiring. I would say it’s ugly.
