An iPod for every child, even I think this is ridiculous

Apple iPod’s to be standard classroom requirements for every child in Michigan? That’s what politicians are pushing for. Times are tough (financially), but will the cost of putting an iPod (or other MP3 player) be worth it?

We have come to the conclusion that the crisis Michigan faces is not a shortage of revenue, but an excess of idiocy. Facing a budget deficit that has passed the $1 billion mark, House Democrats Thursday offered a spending plan that would buy a MP3 player or iPod for every school child in Michigan.

No cost estimate was attached to their hare-brained idea to “invest” in education. Details, we are promised, will follow.

Their plan goes beyond cluelessness. Democrats are either entirely indifferent to the idea that extreme hard times demand extreme belt tightening, or they are bone stupid. We lean toward the latter.

Personally, I think such an idea is ridiculous! Ridiculous I tell you! What are your thoughts?

    Dumb.

If the iPod wasn’t locked down for application development I could see a better reason behind it, but I don’t think the state should be mandating or even purchasing such a device for kids. Let the parents pay for their own kids.

Maybe if the state arranged for discounted mp3 players from different companies instead of buying them out right, as there has to be some decent players out there that they could negotiate to get for around $20-40 with dedicated purchases of that size.

    Idiotic..

With that said where is the Wii contest?

I thinks it’s the stupidest idea ever, but if it passes, I wish I lived in Michigan.

Come on people, wake up. When something political like this comes up, it’s not just the politicians who need to be examined, but also the people who would stand to benefit the most. Obviously Apple would profit, but I doubt they had a serious hand in this. My guess is that Pearson or other educational publishers fed politicians “research data” and promises that handheld educational tools increase learning and test scores. Do you really expect politicians to actually think for themselves?

I dont see how iPods would help educate the students… well not in a way that some other device would serve to be more efficient.

Edcuational content that runs on the ipod, it includes interactive multiple choice Q & A. The ipod is an education device on many levels. This being one of the extreme.

If they were given access to podcasts, say those from UC Berkeley or language courses, even – and then tested on them to measure their progress, I think that this may be a good idea.
