Since Microsoft allows Vista to be installed without a product key, its easy for people to pass around an Vista install DVD an generate their own product keys that are considered legitimate.

Using a brute force technique “Slmgr” will generate a valid Windows Vista product key after hours of trial and error. This causes a whole world of problems for Microsoft since the keys that are being generated are genuine.

People skeptical of how the program works can easily audit the source code, just be sure you make a backup of C:\windows\system32\slmgr.vbs and run the keygen by typing in the command prompt “C:\windows\system32\slmgr.vbs -ipk generate”.

More detailed instructions are available at this link, and the actual key generator is available on SendSpace. [via]

Wasn’t Vista supposed to be safer and blah blah…
I see lots of people getting “legit” keys on the jump link… And that is breaking the silence :D

*cough* rearm the clock trick works. Or so I’ve heard. Something about your install reporting that you have 42300 hours left… indefinitely. That is until MS figures out how to patch that.

Then there will be another crack.
    It’s always like that… a cat and mouse game…

I must be very stupid, but i can’t download the file, when i click the download button, it reloads the page but no download box appears.
Does anybody know about a mirror? A link would be very appreciated

    Hey Derek,
    Hey guys,

I can just ask you to think about this whole thing, the rearming trick doesn’t hurt anyone. Even the old days in XP when you coul get a genuine registration through leaked Enterprise Keys doesn’t really hurt anyone because the enterprises pay a flat fee mostly.

But this stuff really hurts the users and not Microsoft.
    Why?

Just imagine your girlfriend went to a store to buy a Vista License and spend her hard earned $200 on it and then she wants to activate it at home but it doesn’t work because someone else Bruteforced her Key.

This just causes a lot of trouble for the end Users in the end. The shop where you bought your vista will not take it back once the seal is broken and I can’t imagine how long it will take for MS to get you a new key and all the trouble you have upfront to validate you really bought that Vista License.

Just think a minute about that stuff before you download some files and try to Bruteforce a Product Key that could belong to one of your friends or family in the future.

    Just my two cents.

    Cheers,
    Bjoern

  8. Guy says:

Yah, this is done via brute force, Ie, randomly generating something along the lines of: BD32A-GDK32-64GJD-ZJK38-JBDE4

  9. Guy says:

hmm.. It trunicated my last post… continuing (the above key i just typed in randomly, dont try it)

Now, while this is extremely unlikely to come up with a legitimate key, and people are saying it could take years, it is very possible that say.. 100,000 people have ran this thing for a day (which would equal 274 years combined) that at least a few people would get a legitimate key as some are reporting.

    Fake, no, unlikely, yes.

hmmmmmm see i hear this works and no dobt in my mind that it dosent, but ive also heard it only works for 180 days afterwards of activating it then you have to liek check it again or somthing, so all in all this is a successfully written program, however its gonna be a pain in the ass trying to activate this every 180 days, is it worth it, i yet havent found out, but am currently thinking about buying vista cause really they did work hard on it and its kicking them in the ass when people do this, no im not preaching to anyone or leading them against this, its your call everyone but to activate this every 180 days is gonna be terrable

…….good luck to all, aswell as microsoft…….
